Rebuilding Seattle is an economic city building game centered around Seattle’s Great Fire of 1889. Each player will be responsible for managing the zoning and expansion of a major Seattle neighborhood. Each round your population grows, and you can either build a new building, expand into a new suburb, activate an event, or build an iconic landmark, before earning profit based on your neighborhood’s commerce. At the end of the game, the neighborhood with the highest victory points will be the winner. – – 1 to 5 players – – 60 to 120 minutes game play
The game is all about taking one of the neighborhoods of Seattle and adding suburbs, buildings, and iconic landmarks as well as managing your population growth in order to gain profit and points. It is played over three rounds with four phases to each round: increase population, build, profit, and clean up. Each player starts the game with one of the asymmetrical neighborhoods and a suburbia tile.
Each round starts with a designated population increase. During the game, players will need to work to reduce their population as overpopulation will adversely affect their scores during three of the event scoring opportunities that happens each round.
During the Build phase there are three types of actions players can do. Most likely they will buy suburbs and/or buildings from a shared market, looking to find shapes and types that will fit well into their city. The second is to enact one of the 3 laws in their neighborhood. The third is to activate an event. There are 6 different events. Each event will be activated once in each of the 3 rounds of the game. The event cards can be triggered by any player on any turn. These events can lead to actions being taken by the person who triggered it and all other players as well. Timing when to activate is key. When all 6 have been activated that round is complete. Three of the 6 event cards trigger scoring opportunities.
There are several tracks that players are working to enhance throughout the game. Scoring will depend on how well a player has managed to move on the various tracks. There is an amenity track and three quality tracks. The quality tracks represent entertainment buildings, shopping buildings and restaurants. There is a profit phase after all players have finished their building actions. The various buildings will include a polyomino building that needs to be placed on your city and suburbia tiles. Those buildings will provide money during the profit phase of each round, or movement on the quality tracks, or set a player up for additional scoring opportunities at game end. After the events cards have all been used for the third time, the player with the most points will be the best builder in all of Seattle.
