Sneak Preview: Dead Panic

Justin and Anne-Marie De Witt of Fireside Games

Today, Justin and Anne-Marie De Witt of Fireside Games popped in and gave us a sneak preview of their soon-to-be released game, Dead Panic.  Justin and Anne-Marie are the game designers of the cooperative game, Castle Panic and the dice rolling frenzy game, Bears!.

Dead Panic

Make a stand in a remote cabin to survive the night.  Players pick one of 8 characters, each with a special ability, to start in the center of the board to defend against waves of zombies. Ranged weapons are available, but when all else fails hand-to-hand combat will be necessary. Players must work together to defend the cabin until survivors can bring pieces of a radio that will have to be assembled in order to call for a rescue. While venturing outside the cabin one must be extra careful as the zombies will be drawn to you. More danger awaits you when it is your turn to possess the Bait token.  Once the rescue vehicle arrives players must make a run for it.

Anytime during the game if a player takes too many injuries the character dies and comes back as a zombie to chase down their former teammates.  Players are aided by weapons drawn from the cabin deck and hindered by events from the event deck.  Winners will defend the cabin well, retrieve and assemble the radio, then sprint to the rescue van before they too become a zombie.

Wow, is it ever a zombie apocalypse!  Stay tuned for details of Dead Panic’s arrival.

Game Profile: Bora Bora

The exciting strategy game of Gods, Goods and Greatness

Mechanics Dice Rolling, Set Collection, Worker Placement
Theme Tropics
Publication Ravensburger, 2013
Ages 12+
Time 90
Players 2-4
Description

Bora Bora is another incredible strategy game from Stefan Feld.

 In summary:
…players build huts and populate
them with men and women, who help them during the game.  Additionally they will send priests to the
temple to influence the Gods.
Players
use dice to perform a variety of actions using careful insight and tactical
planning.

Players compete to gather the most points over 6 rounds of play as they explore and settle 5 islands. Each of the rounds starts with the players each rolling 3 dice of their color. In turn order and turn order is critical, players place each of their dice on one of 7 action tiles. When placing a die on an action tile the value of that die must be lower than the lowest value of die already occupying that action tile. This provides ample opportunity to mess with your opponent’s plans. Action tiles allow players to expand hut locations, place priests in the temple, take man and/or woman tiles, construct buildings, or use a helper action. The helper action gives the ability to trade for resources, activate man and woman tiles, and claim one of 5 different types of god cards. Activation of man tiles yield tattoos for advancement on the status track, which will affect turn order and award points at the end of the round. Activation of woman tiles will yield shells that will be used to buy jewelry which yield points at the end of the game. The 5 god cards can be used to make better use of your dice, or help score points, or to complete tasks at the end of each round.

The second phase of a
round allows each player to utilize the actions depicted on one of their man
tiles and on one of their woman tiles.
There are 12 different action available on the tiles.  Players will want to have both man and woman
tiles and a variety of actions available to them as the game progresses.
The third and final
phase of each round encompasses various scoring sections, establishing turn
order for the next round, jewelry purchase option, and replacement of one of a
players’ completed task tile.  This
process is outlined in a special section of the board.  The status track awards victory points based
on the number of tattoo’s your men have acquired that round.  This is where turn order for the next round
is established.  The next track is the
Temple track.  Players scored victory
points for the number of priests on the Temple track and the player with the
most priests is awarded a special God tile.
Next is the jewelry market where each player has the option to purchase a
jewelry tile that will be worth victory points at the end of the game.  And, the last section in this phase is the
task tile scoring and replacement. Any one tile that a player has completed
during the round receives its applicable victory points and is then replaced
with a new task tile.
The game ends after 6
rounds.  Additional victory points are
awarded for having huts near fishing grounds, for having huts in every region
on the 5 islands, for any acquired jewelry tiles, and an added bonus if jewelry
tiles were acquired in each round, for completing all tasks, for completely
filling their building area, and for having all 12 man/woman spaces filled.
Bora Bora is definitely
a gamer’s game.  There is a ton of
interesting decisions to be made.  Points
can come from many directions and the many different task tiles will encourage
players to take a different approach each time they play the game.  There are many interesting adventures on the
way to
Bora Bora.
We have an open copy of Bora
Bora
available in our Store Demo Library for
you to come in and try out.

Parade is another in a series of classic card games being reprinted by Z-Man Games.
Parade
Z-Man Games

Parade is a card game for 2 – 6 players that have been transported to Alice’s Wonderland. The Mad Hatter, the Cheshire Cat, the White Rabbit and other characters of Alice in Wonderland are having a parade. You, the players are in charge of organizing the parade.

Character cards are played from a players’ hand to the end of the parade.  The object of the games is to choose cards that will not cause others in the parade line to walk. The cards have point values so any that walk from the parade on your turn will be placed in pile in front of you.  Nobody in Wonderland wants points as the player with the least number of points at the end of the game wins.

9/11 Remeberance

Today marks the 12th anniversary of 9/11, a day of reflective remembrance.  This summer, while on a family trip to the NYC area, I had the privilege of visiting the Memorial Plaza.

Not only was I struck by
the beauty and serenity of the 2 memorial pools but by the story of a pear tree
that had survived after having stood on the WTC plaza since the 1970’s.   From the
memorial pamphlet I learned this about the “Survivor Tree”:
The Survivor Tree – Memorial Plaza

After
9/11, workers found the damaged tree, reduced to an eight-foot tall stump, in
the wreckage at Ground Zero.  The tree
was nursed back to health in a NYC park and grew to be 30 feet tall…  In March 2010, the tree was uprooted by
severe storms, but true to its name, it survived.  In December 2010, the tree was returned to
the World Trade Center site.  Standing just west of the
south pool, it embodies the story of survival and resilience that is so
important to the history of 9/11.

I also learned this interesting tidbit while visiting the Memorial Plaza.  With the recent completion of the spire on top of One Trade Center, formerly known as The Freedom Tower, it makes this the tallest building in not only NYC but in the Western Hemisphere. The building sits on the north end of the Memorial Plaza.

Hopefully, someday everyone will  get an opportunity to visit the 9/11 Memorial Plaza.

Board Game Arrivals: Sept 3rd – 10th

More board game arrivals.  The latest shipment includes the following:

Newly released from Ravensburger is Bora Bora, another big strategy game by designer, Stefan Feld.

Bora Bora
Ravensburger

In Bora Bora, players build huts and populate them
with men and women, who help them during the game.  Additionally they will send priests to the
temple to influence the Gods.  Players
use dice to perform a variety of actions using careful insight and tactical
planning.

The first phase of each of the 6 game rounds begins with players simultaneously rolling their dice and then in turn selecting one of
their die and placing it on an action tile.

The key element to Bora Bora is that when placing a die on an action
tile the value of that die must be lower than the lowest value of die already
occupying that action tile.
  Placing a
high valued die may yield you more options within that action while placing a
low valued die will limit your opponents.

Cheap Shot
Gut Bustin’ Games

Also newly released is Cheap Shot from Gut Bustin’ Games.  The gloves are off in this card game of biting insults and sassy block.  Enter the ring with a hand of 7 cards and prepare to dish it out and take it.  Players will use the cards in their hand to formulate an insult directing it to an opponent.  The insulted player may then block the insult by playing a red block card.  The more cards used in an insult the more potential for bigger points.

Hey Ron, Your shrink / Attracks flies / And /
Sobs over chick flicks / And /
             Is a spoiled brat!

Blocked with a: Oh, blow it out your earhole! red card.
