Game Profile: Nexus Ops

A game of fierce combat and covert operations.

Mechanics Area Control, Dice Rolling, Modular Board
Theme Sci-Fi Battles
Publication Fantasy Flight, 2005
Ages 12+
Time 45-90
Players 2 – 4
Description
Nexus Ops is a
game of fierce sci-fi battles where players control factions of corporate
troops and indigenous life forms on an alien moon.  Players deploy units from their home bases as
they explore the moon, mine resources, purchase troops, win battles, and
fulfill missions.

Nexus Ops brings
a mining element to this sci-fi war game.
Each home base has mines that must be defended at all costs.  More mines can be found by exploring the
modular board between the home bases.
Controlling the mines is critical so players can extract the Rubium
necessary to build additional battle units. The game has 164 plastic figures
that represent the 6 types of life form units that players command.  The 6 unit types are: Humans, Fungoids,
Crystallines, Rock Striders, Lava Leapers, and Rubium Dragons.  The first 3 types (Humans, Fungoids, &
Crystallines) have the least fighting power in battle, but are the only ones
that are capable of mining.  The last 3 types
(Rock Striders, Lava Leapers, & Rubium Dragons) carry the most fighting
power and are used to clear the way and protect the mining life forms.  Each unit type has different battle strengths
and movement ability depending on the terrain. Victory points are gained by
eliminating opponents from contested sites and by completing secret
missions.  Secret missions can be battle
oriented or objective oriented.  The first
player to achieve 12 victory points wins.

Once the base game has been
mastered, the rules for a series of alternate game plays are included.  The alternate play options include:
  • a way to use extra exploration tokens
  • 4-player team rules
  • 6 alternate life form units
  • Several different ways to gain secret missions
  • A vortex hex that can move and/or destroy battle units in the critical center of the board

Game Profile: Escape

You are trapped adventurers inside a cursed temple and must escape before time runs out!

Mechanics Cooperative, Dice Rolling, Tile Placement
Theme Adventure
Publication Queen Games, 2012
Ages 8+
Time 10
Players 1 – 8
Description
For those looking for a
unique gaming experience this game may be just what you are looking for.  Escape is 10 minutes of dice rolling
– cooperative – mayhem!  Players must all
work together to explore the temple, move gems out of the gem depot, search for
the elusive exit, and then escape before time runs out.

Each player has 5 dice with various symbols. Simultaneously
and continuously, all players roll their dice and take actions.  Possible actions include moving into a temple
chamber, adding a new chamber tile, collecting gems, and resolving curses.  Actions are made by matching the symbols
rolled to the required ones indicated on the chamber tiles.  Roll the correct symbols and move to a new
tile.  Roll another set to place a new
tile on the board.  Roll another set and
collect gems and so forth.  Placing new
tiles on the board is how players discover more gem locations and the necessary
temple exit chamber.   In the meantime, players should gather on
chamber tiles where gems can be collected thereby reducing the gem depot
pile.  Just to make things interesting,
there are black mask symbols on the die.
Roll one and that dice is locked and can only be unlocked by the golden
mask.  Luckily, one golden mask will
unlock up to two black masks.  Additionally,
a player can help unlock another player’s locked dice if they are on the same
chamber tile.

So, it’s back to roll – move
– collect gems – explore. And, oh by the way twice during the game players must
return to the starting chamber tile before 1/3 of the time is up or they lose a
die for the remainder of the game.  Now, roll
– move – collect gems – explore some more.
Collect some more gems and then sprint to the exit chamber.  In the exit chamber, each player must roll
one more key symbol then there are gems remaining in the gem depot in order to
escape from the temple.  If all players
make it out it’s a win.  If any player
does not make it out everyone loses.  Now
that you have lost a couple of times and have won a few at the base level, you
can introduce other chamber tiles that contain curses that will make it more
challenging to Escape.

We have an open copy in our Store Demo Game Library available for you to come in and try.

Mechanics Dice Rolling, Area Control

Publication Mayfair Games, 2010
Ages 10+
Time 60
Players 2-4
Description
Las Vegas. The Strip.  To the untrained eye, it’s a sleepy desert
crossroads.  A wasteland of cheap hotels,
gas stations, and dust.  But to you, it
is Paradise.  Your brilliant plan?  You will construct a magnificent chain of
casinos and fill them with light. You will manufacture the ultimate dream of
easy money and impossible luxury.  You
will sell basically nothing.  You are not
alone in this plan.

Lords of Vegas creates the rich and risk taking environment of Las Vegas.  Players will have the opportunity to build
and control casinos along the famous Las Vegas Strip.  The luck of the draw will determine where a
player can start a casino.  Casinos can
be built, expanded, remodeled, and reorganized on a players’ turn.  Timing is critical.  Money and points are awarded at the start of
each players turn.  Money flows freely
for ownership of buildings lots and casinos.
Points lonely go to the boss of the casinos.  The boss is determined by who has the highest
die located in the casino.  Clever
tactics using the remodel and reorganize actions can result in major
gains.  Good rolls of the dice will also
be helpful.

One of the most interesting parts of the game
lies on the scoring track.  Early in the
game scores can go up one point at a time.
Later point increments must be gained 2 at a time, then 3 at a time, the
4, etc.  In order to advance along the
scoring track it is essential for players to be bosses in ever increasingly
larger casinos.  Plan carefully, time
your takeovers, roll the dice well and you too can become of the Lords
of Vegas
