Coming Soon: The Tempest Series

This Fall Alderac Entertainment Group (AEG) is launching 3 new games from the world of Tempest.

Here is an excerpt from AEG describing their new Tempest game concept:

The City-State of Tempest is the home to an unprecendented new idea in board gaming: a persistent world with recurring characters embroiled in an epic tale.

Each game in the Tempest series shares a story, characters, and location with every other game.

AEG’s first 3 games in this new Tempest series are:

Courtier
(Tempest Series)

AEG

Courtier is designed for 2-4 players.  A players’ mission is to act as an influence broker, manipulating the levers of power and granting favors to important supplicants.  This is accomplished by influencing key people.

Players use influence cards to gain sway over a key courtier and power cards to manipulate the board in their favor.  Victory points are earned for completing requests by controlling each of the courtiers listed on a given petition.  Bonus points can be earned from cards and abilities.  The player with the highest score at the end of the game wins.

Dominare
(Tempest Series)
AEG

Dominare is designed both as a 2-4 player and a 5-6 player game through the use of a double-sided board.  Additionally, the 2-4 player board side can be used for a highly combative game for 5-6 players.

In Dominare, players are conspirators seeking to control Tempest.  Agents are the key to the game.  Players spread their influence in key city blocks and districts, use agent & district abilities to further their plans, and manipulate the board to their benefit.
“Use your agents well, & influence and power will be yours.  Use them poorly, and… well, you wouldn’t be the first would-be ruler to vanish into the inky waters of the city canals…”

Mercante
(Tempest Series)
AEG

Mercante is designed for 3-5 players.  It is a game of economic warfare.  Domination of the bustling trade is the ultimate goal of every merchant house in Tempest. Each player controls a merchant house, deploying their trusted agents to purchase goods from the arriving ships and then selling the goods into the most profitable markets.  Players must do more – from “enticing” senators to outright skulduggery – to claim their rightful place at the pinnacle of Tempest’s merchant class.

Players compete to accumulate crowns to finance their operations, and senatorial favors (victory points) to win the game.

Game Profile: Puerto Rico

Prospector, captain, mayor, trader, settler, craftsman, or builder?  Which role will you play in the New World.

Mechanics Variable Phase Order
Theme Economic
Publication Rio Grande Games/Ravensburger, 2002/2019
Ages 13+
Time 90 – 150
Players 2 – 5

Puerto Rico is one of those strategy games where you not only have to plan ahead, it is also critical to be aware of what your opponents are up to.  Each player’s turn starts with the selection of one of seven available roles.  Each role brings a unique advantage to the player selecting it, but allows all players to use that role in turn. Timing of when to select a particular role is critical.

Each player has a player board with twelve spaces for plantations and twelve spaces for buildings.  There are five different crops.  Each crop, except corn, must be paired with its matching production building to generate goods.  Goods can then be sold at the trading house
for money or placed on ships to earn victory points.  Money will be necessary to buy not only
production buildings, but also markets, warehouses and a variety of other buildings with added abilities for the player who owns them and populates them with colonists.  Colonists must also be on plantations for them to produce.  In addition to the four types of production buildings and twelve special buildings there are five large buildings whose sole function is to provide victory points at the end of the game.  Each building also has a victory point value.

Puerto Rico is one of those games that will have you coming back for more.  The first time you play, you will know you could play better.  There is just a lot to keep track of.  Timing in role
selection is significant.  Then all you to do is manage your buildings, your plantations, your colonists and your money better than everyone else.  There are many paths to victory and it would be fun to try them all.

The 2019 Edition adds the two expansions: New Buildings, and The Nobles.  The New Buildings expansion adds forests and 12 new small buildings and 2 large buildings.  The Nobles expansion adds 6 small buildings, 2 small pink Jeweler production building, a large Royal Garden building, and 20 noble tokens.  With the Nobles expansion, exhausting the colonists supply does not trigger the end of the game.  Nobles can be played anywhere and anytime as a colonist.  A noble acts the same as a colonist except as noted on some of the new buildings.  Nobles are worth game end victory points.
