Game Profile: Sleeping Queens

A royally rousing card game.

Mechanics Card Drafting
Theme Royalty
Publication Gamewright, 2005
Ages 8+
Time 20
Players 2 – 5
Description
Rise and Shine! The
Pancake Queen, the Ladybug Queen and 10 of their closest friends have fallen
under a sleeping spell and it’s your job to wake them up. Use strategy, quick
thinking and a little luck to rouse these napping nobles from their royal
slumbers.

Twelve queens with various point values will lie sleeping (face down) in the center of the play area.  Each turn players will play a card from their hand and perform it’s action or choose to discard cards, then conclude by drawing cards to get their hand back to 5 cards. Play a knight to steal a queen or take a chance on a juggling jester.  But watch out for wicked potions and dastardly dragons!

Some arithmetic comes into play as your hand will collect number cards that have no other purpose than to clutter it.  On your turn you can discard either a pair of identical numbers or 3 or more cards that make an addition equation such as the numbers 2, 3, and 5.  You can discard all three since 2 + 3 = 5.  At the end of your turn remember to draw cards to get your hand back to 5 cards.

You can choose one of two ways to end the game: 1) when a player has collected 5 awakened queens or 50 points worth of awakened queens or 2) when there are no more Sleeping Queens left in the center play area and whoever has the most points wins.

This kids card game promotes memory development, strategy, and elementary arithmetic skills.

The rules are simple: you place a tile to build the next step for your stone to follow.  Paths will cross and connect, and the choices you make affect all the journey across the board. Stay the path –your journey begins here.

This is a fun family game for 2 to 8 players.

Mechanics Tile Placement, Abstract
Theme Hunting
Publication Rio Grande Games, 1973
Ages 8+

Description
What happens when the
hunter becomes the hunted?  In Tally Ho
one player takes the role of the hunters and the lumberjacks; the other takes
the role of the foxes and bears. Both players hunt each other.   At first, the
forest lies peacefully under the face down tiles. As the tiles get flipped over and moved around the board, the forest awakens and the hunt destroys the
serenity of the forest. The lumberjacks cut down and remove trees to open swaths through the forest to
provide hunting fields for the hunters. The bears then use these same aisles to
track the hunters and the lumberjacks.
Unfortunately for the ducks and pheasants they can be caught and eaten by the foxes or caught in the cross hairs of the hunter. The two sides are balanced with luck
dominating the early game, but skill taking over at the end. Good hunting!

Description
Eeek!  There’s a moose loose in the kitchen… and another in the bathroom!  In this silly matching card game, the goal is to keep the moose out of your house, while giving them to your opponents at the same time.  Use a door card to close off empty room or if you’re lucky, plant a moose trap to keep those lovable but uninvited visitors away!  The player with the fewest moose wins.

All players start the game with an invisible empty “house” in front of them and a hand of 4 cards. As the game progresses, players fill opponents’ houses with rooms and then those rooms with moose. On their turn a player will draw a card from the draw deck and then choose one of their cards to play. You might play a There’s a Moose in the House card on any opponent or play an empty room card on any opponent, or play a door card to close off an empty room.

No matter which cards you play, this is a fun family game with silly looking cards.

Name Ticket To Ride Asia
Byline Embark On An Incredible Adventure
New out for 2011 is Ticket To Ride Map Collection: Asia (Ticket

) an expansion to Ticket To Ride orTicket
To Ride Europe
.  Ticket To Ride Asia has a
double-sided board allowing players to embark on an incredible Asian adventure
with partners on the Team Asia map or individually on
the Legendary Asia map.

Team Asia is designed specifically for team play with 4 or 6 players.
Players pair up in teams of 2 and should sit next to each other so that
players on the same team always play in succession.  Players on the
same team score together but must keep their own set of trains
separate from each other.  Teammates on the same team also share 2
cardholders. At the start of the game each player is dealt a hand of
destination cards and train cards.  Next, each player selects a
destination card from their hand and places it in their team’s common
cardholder.  The remaining cards in their hand are to be kept secret from
the other players including their teammate.  When train cards are drawn
the player must place one in their team’s common cardholder and the other in
their hand.  When playing a Destination, players can use a combination of
train cards from their own hand and from their team’s common cardholder.
 Tunnels in
Team Asia play similar to tunnel play
in
Ticket To Ride Europe

Legendary Asia is
designed for players to travel alone.  At the start of this game players
are each dealt 1 Long Route and along with the 3 regular Destination Tickets,
of which at least 2 Destination Tickets must be kept.  Legendary
Asia
also includes designated mountain routes.  On those
routes some spaces will be marked with an X.  A player who claims those
routes must play a second train on the space.  It will count as 2 extra
points, but will leave you less trains to finish the game.  In this
version of the game there is a 10 point bonus to the player who connects to the
most cities.

Publication Rio Grande Games, 2009
Ages 13+
Time 60
Players 2 – 4
Description

In Tobago the adventure begins when you assemble
the modular board into one of 32 different scenarios.  Then three types of
monuments are placed randomly around the board.  Somewhere on the island,
four different treasures are buried.  The adventurers now use clue cards
to narrow down and finally identify exactly where each of the buried treasures
are located.  Now, the race is on to get your ATV across the various
terrain tiles to be the first to arrive at and claim a buried treasure.
Once the treasure is claimed, treasure cards will come into play to
distribute the treasure amongst the adventurers who contributed clue cards for
that treasure.  Powerful amulets become available on the board once a
treasure is raised and distributed.  These amulets are
claimed by racing your ATV in the same manner as you do for the treasures.
Amulets grant powers that help players in almost every aspect of the
game.  The game ends after the treasure card deck runs out, but not before
the treasure is distributed.
