The classic White Elephant gift exchange is now simulated in this classic holiday game.
It’s the classic cheapskate dilemma…you have three people on your Christmas list and an aversion to opening your pocketbook. Luckily you will be attending several White Elephant gift exchange parties where, if you “play your cards right,” you can swap some junk you found in the attic for re-giftable treasures. Viola! You fill your gift list for free – the ultimate cheapskate victory. Great Uncle Irwin may just be getting that Fish Pitcher that gurgles when you pour!

Just In This Week: Kingsburg and …
Discover this great strategy game, Kingsburg. An excerpt from the game manufacturer – Fantasy Flight Games describes the game as:
“Combining many of the best elements of European and American board game design styles, Kingsburg has been praised for its clever use of dice and its high level of player interaction. Though dice-rolling is a significant mechanic of the game, the presence of luck never feels arbitrary or excessive. Rather, the game encourages players to apply their dice rolls strategically, in ways that simultaneously benefit themselves and vex their opponents. And while a card-drawing mechanic determines the nature and difficulty of yearly NPC enemies (these enemies must be faced by each player individually, and failure against them can cause major setbacks), players can “scout the draw” in advance by influencing the right advisor. This means that players who have devoted resources to acquiring this valuable intelligence can adequately prepare for the coming onslaught while their opponents languish in ignorance… or they can bluff, exaggerating the threat and compelling their opponents to overspend!”
New Portland game inventor hits the beach!
An excerpt from Oregon Lives’s article covering Emily and how she invented this fun new game
“On her 12th birthday this year, Emily Ehlers, a seventh-grader at West Sylvan Middle School, received a mysterious package from Massachusetts.
“I had a small suspicion that it was my game, so I opened it.” She beams, the delight of the moment still evident.
Inside the package was a game, Mermaid Beach. She had dreamed up the ocean-themed card game when she was in third grade. Four years later there it was, professionally produced and packaged by Gamewright, maker of popular family games like Slamwich, Rat-a-Tat Cat and Sleeping Queens. She was officially a game inventor.”“Emily and her family spent her third-grade year sailing a boat down the East Coast of the United States and on to the Bahamas. She and her brothers, Jake and Drew, were home-schooled for the year. They spent time playing games, including Sleeping Queens, Emily’s favorite. “When I found out it was invented by a girl, I wanted to do that too,” she says.”
