Game Profile: Monster Cafe

A terribly tasty family card game.

Classification Family Card Game
Mechanics Set Collection, Press Your Luck
Publication Gamewright, 2013
Ages 8+
Time 15
Players 2 – 4
Description
Monster Cafe is a quick playing card game for players looking for exotic and
appetizer menu items like spaghetti and eyeballs and roasted roadkill,
etc.  Four tables each featuring a select
menu item will be available in each of the four rounds for seating monsters
along with a deck of monster cards.  Each
monster has an appetite for a particular food item that is indicated on the card.  The object of the game is to score the most
points by collecting monsters and matching them up with their favorite food.

On their turn, players
can either draw a monster card to place at one of the available tables, or they
can claim a table that already has monsters seated at it.  A table can have no more than 4
monsters.  And, a player can only claim
one table per round.  After four rounds,
a player scores one point for each monster they have claimed that matches the
food on their claimed table cards.  Any
monster with no food to his liking scores one minus point.  Players should not gather many angry hungry
monsters without the right food on the table.
The cafe manager who satisfies the taste buds of many monsters will be
the winner of
 Monster Cafe.

We have an open copy of Monster Cafe available in our Demo Games Library for
you come in and try.

Game Profile: Mombasa

Trade rivalry in the age of chartered companies.

Classification Strategy Game
Mechanics Action Programming, Ara Influence, Hand Management, Worker
Placement
Publication R&R Games, 2015
Ages 12+
Time 75 – 180
Players 2 – 4
Description
Mombasa is a strategy game that features a rotating display hand
mechanism at its core.  It also throws in
elements of area control, stock manipulation, hand management and a little
worker placement.  In short, there is a
lot of interesting decisions to be made during the course of a game.  Four exploration companies are competing to
generate the most value for their stock holders.  Players can acquire shares of stock in any or
all of the companies.  Each company has a
double sided board placed on their side of the main game board.  This board is where players track the number
of shares acquired.  Movement up the
track can also yield other benefits, like coins or other bonuses.
The heart of the game
revolves around a unique card play mechanic. Each player starts the game with
the same 9 action cards that will be altered by a starting token that they have
chosen from the 2 dealt to them.  The
selected starting token will give each player a different benefit and tell them
which 3 of their 9 starting action cards will be placed above their player
board in 3 separate slots.  These cards
will not be available for a player to use in round 1 of the 7 rounds that
comprise the game.  At the start of each
round, players simultaneously select 3 action cards from their hand and place
them face down in the 3 slots below their player board that line up with the 3
slots above the board.  After everyone
has placed their selections the cards are then revealed.  In turn order, players use their action
cards.  When all actions are completed,
each player will select the card(s) from only one of the slots located above
their board and add them to their hand.
Next they will move each played action card from its slot below their
board to the corresponding slot above the board.  In this way players build card combinations
for use in future rounds.
The different action
cards can be used to do a number of different things.  Goods cards are used to acquire additional
action cards or to advance along 1 of the stock tracks.  Expansion cards are used to advance 1 of the
company’s area of control across a map of Africa gaining you benefits along the
way.  Expansion is where players have an
impact on the value of a company’s stock causing it to increase or decrease.  A bookkeeper card is used to move a player’s
token along the book track on their player board.  A diamond merchant card is used to move a
player’s token along their diamond track also located on their player
board.  Both the book track and the
diamond track can yield major points at game end depending on how far a player
has advanced.  In addition, each of these
tracks has a point when reached that opens up another action card slot (both
below and above their board) allowing the player to increase their number of
playable action cards each round from 3 to 4 and 5.  Eventually, a player can have up to 5 action
cards in play per round.
Additionally, players
have 2 bonus markers that can be place on an empty bonus space to gain extra
actions for use in the current or next round.
These bonus action opportunities consists of advancement on the stock
tracks, claiming the 1st player marker, gaining additional coins,
acquiring an action card, gaining an additional good, increasing your expansion
movement, or grabbing an additional bookkeeper or diamond merchant for use in
the next round.  In this way you can add
to the number of actions you can take in a round.
After 7 rounds players
add up points for their remaining gold coins, the point level they are at on
each of their diamond bookkeeper tracks, and calculate the value of their
shares in each company they have stock in.
The player with the most points wins.
Mombasa is a game where there are a lot of little things going on that total up to one big game.  This is a game that will require multiple plays to learn how to orchestrate all of the mechanics into a powerful point-generating machine.

  Back In!
Arboretum
Z-Man Games
Arboretum is a 2 to 4 player strategy card game of developing a garden of different types of trees.  There is a deck of 80 cards in ten different colors, with each color featuring a different species of tree; each color has cards numbered 1 through 8.

During game play, players will create a pathway of trees face up in front of them of increasing value, where the first and last cards are of the same color. Players will also need to collect in their hand as many of the trees that match their tree path.  You must choose wisely which trees to place in your arboretum and which to keep in your hand, as this balance is critical to scoring.

Castles Of BurgundyThe Card Game
Ravensburger
Fans of the strategy board game, Castles of Burgundy will surely like Stefan Feld’s new card game format.

Castles of Burgundy: The Card Game, is a set collection game at it’s core.  The game is played over 5 rounds with 6 turns in each round. The object is to maximize victory points through strategic actions. Playing cards serve as “dice” that provide the possible actions players can make.  Will you trade or buy livestock, build city buildings or invest in scientific progress?  There are many paths to prosperity and prestige.

Castles of Burgundy: The Card Game has enough similarities to the board game version that it’s easy to pick up the rules. However, there are enough differences to make it a different game.

Onirim
Z-Man Games

Enter the oniverse through a mysterious labyrinth.

Onirim is a solo/cooperative card game: you must work against the game, and find the oneiric doors before you run out of cards. Will you wander in each room, hoping to find the door that will take you further, or will you let chance sort things out and trust in your luck? In both cases, you will have to deal with the slithering nightmares that haunt the hallways of the labyrinth.

Here is this week’s exciting game arrivals:

    New Game Arrival!
Karuba
Haba
Karuba is a tile-laying, puzzle-solving family game.  It is easy and quick to learn and plays in about 30 to 40 minutes.

Players are racing to get their 4 explorers across their player board to their explorers’ respective temples and pick up as many crystals and gold nuggets as possible along the way.  Points are scored for getting to a temple.  The sooner you reach a temple the more points you’ll score.  Crystals and gold nuggets are worth victory points as well.

Each player begins with a player board, 4 different color explorers with 4 matching temples, and a stack of numbered tiles with pathways. One player will draw and reveal a numbered tile that each player is must take the similar one from their supply and do one of two things: 1) put it onto their board anywhere they choose or 2) discard it to move their explorers.

Play continues in this manner until either all the tiles have been placed or a player has gotten all 4 of their explorers to their temples.  So while each players’ board starts out looking similar each will end up looking different based on the way each places their tiles.
