Game Goes “Off The Charts” – Valley Of The Kings

We had a fantastic time on our vacation trip to Santa Fe, NM.  For this trip the card game Valley of the Kings went way off the charts to Museum Hill on the Old Santa Fe Trail.

Valley of the Kings is
a great travel card game in that you can throw it in your carry-on bag and it
doesn’t require lots of table space.  
We found the perfect spot at Museum Hill for a few games of Valley of Kings.  A nice picnic spot surrounded by green hills, adobe buildings, and wonderful bronze sculptures.

What a way to spend an afternoon!

Description


Valley of the Kings is
the perfect deck building card game to take with you on a trip.  It fits in a small box and doesn’t take up
too much room on the table. The game play will keep players engaged from start
to finish.
Valley of the Kings starts
like most deck building games.  Players begin
the game with a tomb card and 10 Start cards of which there are 4 different
types each type having a special ability. 
Players deal themselves 5 cards from their start deck and immediately
bump into one of the unique elements of the game.  In the center of the play area are 6 face-up
cards arranged in a pyramid with 3 cards forming the base, then 2 cards forming
the 2nd tier and then 1 card as the top tier. Players can only buy
cards from the bottom level of 3 cards. 
The remaining cards from the upper tiers now tumble down to refill the empty
spaces below them.  The top of the
pyramid is refilled from a central draw deck at the end of a player’s
turn.  On their turn players may use all
5 cards in their hand.  Each card has a
gold value, a purchase cost, and a special ability.  Players can play each card for only one
purpose:  a) use the gold value to
purchase a card from the pyramid, b) use its special ability, or c) place the
card under the player’s tomb card entombing it. 
The need to entomb cards is another unique element to the game.  A player’s tomb is the only avenue for
accumulating victory points.  When a card
is entombed it is taken out of play from the player’s deck and can no longer be
used.  So, how long should a player hang
onto a powerful card to use versus entombing it for victory points?
The game ends when all cards in the
draw deck and the pyramid are acquired. 
Only those cards in each player’s tomb are scored to determine the game
winner.  Any entombed Start cards are
each worth 1 victory point.  Unique
Artifact cards have a specified victory point value ranging from 2 to 5.  In addition, there are 5 types of card sets
that yield points based on the number of different cards in the set a player has entombed.  The set types are
Sarcophagi, Canopic Jars, Amulets, Books, and Statues.

Valley of the Kings provides for plenty of opportunity to mess with your
opponents and interesting decisions on each round.  Which card to buy, how to tumble the pyramid,
which card to entomb, and when to entomb really powerful cards that you want in
your deck to use.

some really nice game expansions came in with this week’s shipment.  Come in and check out this week’s game arrivals.

Five Tribes
Days of Wonder
Newly released from Days Of Wonder is Five Tribes: The Djnns of Nagala, considered the first gamers game from Days Of Wonder.  The game designer Bruno Cathala wanted to put a new twist on worker placement games.  Five Tribes is what Bruno labels a worker “displacement” game. All of the game’s wooden meeples start out randomly placed on a 5 x 6 grid of randomly placed tiles.  The meeples make up 5 tribes; the Viziers, the Elders, the Merchants, the Builders, and the Assassins with each a specific color and specific action. Each round is initiated with players bidding for turn order. On their turn players will select a tile of meeples, move and drop them off on adjacent tiles, perform the tribe action related to the last meeple relocated during the move action and then perform the action associated with this last tile.  There are many ways to score victory points in this game.

Sons of Anarchy: Men of Mayhem
Gale Force Nine

New from Gale Force Nine is Sons of Anarchy: Men of Mayhem, a game of money, guns and violent consequences based on cable network FX’s popular show about the lives of a close-knit outlaw motorcycle club.  Sons of Anarchy: Men of Mayhem consists of a modular game board consisting of 24 site tiles, double-sided clubhouse cards that provide 2 levels of play.  One side of a club card is Unleaded, where every club has the same starting resources and no special rules. The reverse side is High Octane, where each club has different starting resources and unique special rules that reflect each group’s particular brand of mayhem.
In Sons of Anarchy: Men of Mayhem you will control an outlaw biker club, directing its various criminal activities in the bid to control the town of Charming and raise the most cash. You will have a unique club to lead in the game and on your turn will choose what sites of interest to fight for and what territories to yield.  Negotiate, threaten and ally with rival clubs when it serves your needs, but be wary of the inevitable knife in the back.  Be the club with the most cash at the end of the game wins.
