Description

Dead Panic is another incredible co-operative game from designers Justin and
Anne-Marie DeWitt of Fireside Games.
Make a stand in a remote
cabin to survive the night.  Players pick
one of 8 characters, each with a special ability, to start in the center of the
board to defend against waves of zombies. 
Ranged weapons are available, but when all else fails hand-to-hand
combat will be necessary.  Players must
work together to defend the cabin until survivors can bring pieces of a radio
that will have to be assembled in order to call for a rescue.  While venturing outside the cabin one must be
extra careful as the zombies will be drawn to you.  More danger awaits you when it is your turn to
possess the Bait token.  Once the rescue
vehicle arrives players must make a run for it.
Anytime during the game
if a player takes too many injuries the character dies and comes back as a
zombie to chase down their former teammates. 
Players are aided by weapon drawn from the cabin deck and hindered by events
from the events deck.  Winners will
defend the cabin well, retrieve and assemble the radio, then sprint to the
rescue van before they too become a zombie. 
Wow, is this ever a zombie apocalypse!

Take on the role of a young trainee witch, such as Tiffany Aching and Petulia Gristle, travelling across the land of Lancre helping folks where you can and fighting evil and other things as and when they appear. Most problems can be solved with a little headology, but at times you must resort to magic.  However, care must be taken as too much magic can lead a young witch to turn ‘Black Aliss’.  You’ll be fine just as long as you have the odd cup of tea with a fellow witch.

The Witches can be played collaboratively, competitively, or even as a solitaire game.

Newly released from Queen Games is Quest, the 2nd expansion to Escape: Curse of the Temple.

The adventure continues as this expansion introduces 6 customized characters each with 2 specific abilities.  Now, not only do you have to activate the gems before escaping you must also complete a few quests.  There are 5 unique quest chambers, the Tree of Life Chamber, the Task Chamber, the Ghost Chamber, the Special Gems Chamber, and the Dice Chamber.  1-3 of these chambers will be randomly selected and shuffled in with the regular chambers.  As these are revealed players must complete it’s specific requirements before escaping the temple.

Gloom: Unquiet Dead

From Atlas Games and just in time for Halloween is Unquiet Dead, the 4th expansion to the popular card game, Gloom. This expansion adds new modifiers, events, and untimely deaths and introduces Stories, Undead, and Timing Symbols.
With Stories, whoever claims a Story gains a special benefit. But just try and see how long you can keep it. The Undead are special modifiers that let players become a supernatural creature perhaps a mummy, or a ghost, or a vampire, or a haunted portrait, etc.  These will also count as both living and dead.  Timing Symbols will tell players if a card has an Instant, Ongoing, or Persistent effect at a glance. The spooks have definitely come out to play in this expansion!

Tokaido
Passport Game Studios

Tokaido is a 45-60 minute game for 2-5 players.  You are travelers on Japan’s important route that connects Kyoto to Edo (now Tokyo), the East Sea Road.  This route offers a variety of stations in which travelers may acquire souvenirs, meet interesting people, visit shrines, taste local cuisine, take a dip in a hot springs, and collect art panels to complete a beautiful landscape picture.  All of these opportunities provide various ways to score points or gain abilities.  Beginning at either Kyoto or Edo players will all travel in the same direction.  Turn order is determined by the player occupying the last spot on the road. Therefore, players must balance how quickly they want to travel down the road.  Do you move fast and far so you can be first at a desired station’s opportunity? Or do you take your time stopping at more stations?  Each station has a limit on the number of travelers who can stop there so you don’t want to be too far behind as you may miss a valuable opportunity.

Game Profile: Relic Runners

Description

Relic Runners is a new game from Days of Wonder.  The colorful board will be stacked with ruins
and temples.  Each player’s explorer
starts at base camp.  On their turn the
explorers will move along a trail.  They
can land on and explore a ruin for one ration pack, which allows the player to
place one of their pathways on a trail segment adjacent to the ruin.  Personal paths will allow faster movement
during later rounds.  Explorers can also
move to and explore one of three different types of temples.  Tiles in the Purple temples are face up and
have a one-time immediate use.  Tiles in
the Blue temples are face down on the board and award victory points at the end
of the game.  Tiles in the Ivory temples
award special abilities that can be used for the remainder of the game.  Each ruin and each temple begins with 3 tiles.  When all 3 tiles from a ruin have been
explored a relic is placed in the temple. 
In order to claim one of these valuable relics an explorer must start
their turn on a space occupied by a relic and finish on a space that contains a
similar type relic.
Throughout the game players
can use toolboxes collected along river trails to perform special actions
including placing new paths, moving existing paths, acquiring rations, and
scoring additional victory points. 
Explorers will need to visit base camp periodically to replenish their
ration supply.
Placing paths early in
the game will lead to opportunities to claim relics later in the game.  Points are awarded for relics, blue tiles,
some purple tiles and some abilities on the ivory tiles.  The player with the most victory points
wins.  Relic Runners comes with great components, interesting decisions and a lot
of replayability.
