This week’s arrivals include a couple more new  board games.




For Catan fans Mayfair Games has just released a 4th big box expansion, Catan: Explorers & Pirates.

Add to your base game of Settlers of Catan game with Catan: Explorers & Pirates, a flexible set of 5 intriguing scenarios and 3 missions.  Each scenario builds on each other leading up to the final all-inclusive scenario.

Explore and trade with ships designed to carry settlers, cargo or adventurers.  Settle new lands, battle pirates, acquire spices and locate the grand banks of Catanian fish!

  • Land-Ho! Explore the seas of Catan and discover two new islands to expand your settlements.  Once you’ve discovered an island, you must use ships to ferry settlers from one island to another and colonize distant lands.
  • Pirate Lairs! Pirates prowl the seas along with your trading vessels.  Play tribute to the pirates or drive them off.  Then find and capture their lairs to earn gold and Victory Points.
  • Fish For Catan! The people of Catan are short of food.  These are deep water fish thought, so first you must find their shoals before you catch them.  The Council of Catan will reward players with Victory Points for returning fish to the island, as well as for capturing pirate lairs. Just watch out for roaming pirates, not only will they demand gold for tribute, they might get to the fish before you do!
  • Spices For Catan! The Council of Catan wants you to find fish and spices for the people of Catan.  As before, they reward the most industrious merchant captains with Victory Points.  Obtaining spice will require you to become friends with the mysterious inhabitants of the Spice Islands but in return they will not only trade you spices but teach you their knowledge of sailing or even pirate fighting techniques.
  • Explores & Pirates! This lengthy and challenging scenario brings everything from the previous scenarios together. Explore new lands, capture pirate lairs, find fish and befriend the inhabitants of the spice isles.

Game Event: Dominion Tournament

The competition was fierce in today’s Dominion Tournament. Players battled through three rounds plus a fourth tie-breaking round before the top three advanced to the final battle.  In the end Caleb emerged as the victor.

Pinata
Rio Grande Games



Just released from Rio Grande is Pinata, a reprint of their popular game: Balloon Cup.  Game designer, Stephen Glenn designed both of these 2-player games.


In Pinata, players compete to collect the colored candy that is inside the Pinata.  When a player has collected enough candy of a given color, he earns the medal card for that color.  The 1st player to earn 3 medal cards is the winner.  Players play their cards next to several mats on the table.  Players usually play their cards on their side of the mats, but they may sometimes play on their opponent’s side, a move that can ruin their opponent’s plans.

OddVille
What’s Your Game?

Recently released from What’s Your Game? is OddVille, a city-building card game for 2 to 4 players.


Oddly enough, several of you have been hired to build the city of OddVille, home to 4 powerful worker guilds.  Players will use their workers to obtain resources, coins, and building projects in order to build the most valuable buildings and to gain the favor of guild members.  The guild members can be powerful allies in constructing the city and in gaining victory points. Each building constructed by a player earns victory points in various ways.  The game ends as soon a player has built their 6th building. The player with the most victory points wins.

After playing The Great Heartland Hauling Co we find that the game has a lot going on. There is a random setup to the central playing area. Depots vary not only in the cargo that is available for pickup but also in the cargo that can be unloaded.  Additionally, the unloaded value of a particular cargo can vary from depot to depot.  A copy of The Great Heartland Hauling Co is available in our Store Demo Game Library for you to try out while you are here.

Also, newly released is this expansion to Innovation.  Figures in the Sand expansion contains 105 historical Figures from the same ages as the technology cards in Innovation.  They are similar in layout, but instead of a dogma effect, each Figure contains a karma effect.  Figures being mortals are more fragile than the technology cards and fade over time.
