Game Arrivals: Mar.17th – 23rd


Here are this week’s game arrivals:


We accountants can lead interesting lives beyond numbers.  Some of us open games stores while others design board games. Recently released from R&D Games through Game Salute and generating quite the buzz is Keyflower .  One of this games’ designers is Richard Breese an accountant who in his ‘spare’ time designs board games.
Keyflower

Keyflower is played over the 4 seasons; spring, summer, fall, and winter.  Each player begins the game with a home tile and an initial random team of 8 workers of various colors. The workers are used to bid for tiles to add to their village and to generate resources.  Each season more workers will arrive on the Keyflower and her sister boats and new tiles will be available for auction.  The player whose village and workers generate the most victory points wins the game.  Keyflower has an interesting worker placement mechanic where workers are used for both bidding and for taking actions.  Part of the strategy is to maximize the size and color makeup of your worker pool while minimizing your opponents worker pool.

Keyflower presents players with many different challenges and each game will be different due to the mix of village tiles which appear in that particular game.

Also newly released is The Desolation of Hoth,  the first Force Pack for Star Wars: The Card Game.  This pack contains objective sets 37-42.

Monster Factory

Newly released from Rio Grande Games and designed by Donald Vaccarino  (Dominion, Kingdom Buillder, & Infiltration) and Nina Paley is Monster Factory, a silly monster-building game aimed at kids 5 and up.  

In Monster Factory players create their own goofy looking monster and possibly some minions.  Each player take turns drawing and placing tiles, either adding to their own monsters or to those of their opponents.  The goal is to make a big monster, but not so big that it goes unfinished.

We have a copy open in our Demo Game Library so come in and try it out.

From Fantasy Flight aimed at those of you who are Star Wars fans is Star Wars X-Wing Minature Game.

X-Wing is a fast-paced dogfighting game set in the Star Wars universe for 2 players.  Join the Rebel Alliance or lead the Galactic Empire.  Whichever allegiance you serve you will control starfighters, outfit them with a variety of pilots, special weapons & upgrades, and attempt to outmaneuver their opponent. The player who destroys all of their opponents ships wins.

From AEG comes Smash Up a fast-paced shufflebuilding card game that you can’t live without.

What do pirates, ninjas, robots, zombies, aliens, wizards, and some other things have in common?  They’re all trying to take over the world! But they can’t do it alone — so they’re teaming up.

In Smash Up players each chooses 2 factions, smashes them together, and then smash their opponents.  Your goal is total world domination.  Use your minions to crush your enemy bases. Score 15 victory points and win the game.

Death-defying race to summit the worlds second highest mountain.

Description
K2 is the second largest mountain in the world
with a height of 28,251 ft above sea level and is also known as “Savage Mountain” due to the difficulty of ascent.  In this board game you and your fellow players are going to attempt an ascent to the top of this monster of a mountain where the fatality rate is high.  Can anyone survive to tell the tale?

K2 requires each player manages 2 climbers to reach the top of the mountain and survive not only the climb up, but also the descent. The climbers start at a a base camp where they can rest and acclimatize.  On their turn players will use a variety of movement cards and acclimatization cards.  Sections of the mountain are harder to climb and require more movement points to progress.  The lowest elevations allow climbers to gain acclimatization points.  The higher climbers go on the mountain the more acclimatization points are required to be there.  Each climber carries a tent that can be pitched to provide shelter not only for themselves but also for their climbing team member which in turn will save them valuable acclimatization points.

As in real life, weather plays a big factor when climbing at elevation.  The game provides 18 days of weather for the climb.  Players can see the pending weather conditions for up to 6 days in advance.  Surviving storms at various elevations on the mountain causes the loss of additional acclimatization points.  Bad weather my cause climbers to move to a lower elevation or hurry to a location with a tent for protection. The goal of the game is for each climber to ascend as high as possible and survive in 18 days. Each climber scores points for the highest level they reach.  The team with the most combined points for their 2 climbers wins.  If a climber runs out of acclimatization points they perish on the mountain and score no victory points for their team.

After playing K2 we find that the game really grabs the intensity of climbing at altitude where survival is more important than every climber reaching the summit.  Once players have learned survival skills on the easier side of the game board and the summer climbing weather, they can flip the board over and try a more dangerous climbing route and choose to use the harsher winter weather conditions.

Suburbia is a tile-laying game where each player plans, builds, and develops their township into a major metropolis.  As your town grows, income and reputation are modified.  Income increases afford you more cash on hand to purchase better and more valuable buildings. Increase in reputation gains you more population.  The goal is have your township thrive and end up with a greater population than any of your opponents.  Having the metropolis with the greatest population at the end of the game will make you the winner.

Can’t get enough firefigthing fun?  Urban Structures is an expansion pack for Flash Point: Fire Rescue that adds more exciting ways to enjoy your favorite firefighting game. 


Urban Structure contains a double sided mounted game board, each side is a different building – The High Rise and The Brownstone.  This expansion also includes the Structural Engineer specialist card, and additional map specific rules with variants and scenarios for both the expansion and the base game.
