We don’t just sell board games, we also provide tables and a library full of open board games, card games, and dice games for you to come in and play.  The tables are open during store hours as well as during our Weds and Friday evening Open Game Play Nights.

New in from Plan B Games is Century: Spice Road the first in a trilogy of games each set in different centuries, from the 15th to the 17th, and depicts the major trading systems and routes of these eras.


Century: Spice Road is a 2-5 player game that plays in 30 to 45 minutes.  The game moves at a good pace. You will play merchant cards from your hand to collect, upgrade, and trade spices. You’ll spend your spices  to claim point cards.  During the course of the game you’ll add new merchant cards to your hand giving you additional abilities on future turns. On your turn you will take 1 of 4 possible actions: Acquire a new merchant into your hand paying any associated costs, Play a merchant card into your play area utilizing it’s ability, Rest and take all of the merchant cards from your play area back into your hand, or Claim a point card by spending the required spice cubes.

Fields Of Green
 Local gamer and Envoy game demonstrator, Jeff will be here to present Fields Of Green, a 2 to 4-player game playing in about 45 minutes.  You will take the role of a farmer trying to build your farm. By drafting location cards with fields, livestock and various buildings you’ll place them in your play area trying to create a winning economic engine.

In Yamatai, players compete to earn victory points using different strategies. The main game board is made up of a maze of islands from which players will place fleets of boats delivering resources, collect culture tokens, and construct buildings.  Players use the culture tokens to recruit specialists that provide benefits. Fleet tiles consists of the quantity of boats you get for placement and their resource type, provide a one-time special power, and determines turn order for the next round. Building tiles provide end of game points.

Games Go “Off The Charts”: Portal Of Heroes, Saboteur The Duel, and Mystery Rummy

More games went “Off The Charts” this past Monday.  It was a gorgeous day for a picnic lunch at Trillium Lake in Mt Hood National Forest.

The first game to the table was Saboteur The Duel, a two-player version of the classic multi-player Saboteur.  Ron’s green dwarf ended being the better miner with well established pathways to the treasure cards.  He was also more sinister as he seriously blocked Lynn.  Her blue dwarf is probably still lost in the mine.

Next out of the box and onto the table was Mystery Rummy: Jekyll & Hyde, a two-player card game that’s a combination of traditional rummy and a good mystery.   Lynn made great use of the Potion card to get Dr. Jekyll or Mr. Hyde visible at just the right times to claim a big victory.

Portal Of Heroes

We still had some time left before we needed to get going so we pulled out Portal Of Heroes, a fantasy card game for 2 to 5 players.  Ron had to hoard four #7 pearl cards to score a 4-point creature card at the last minute to claim the win and to get even with Lynn for beating me at this game at Friday’s Game Night.

Description
Portal Of
Heroes comes in a small box,
but carries more depth than the box size suggests.  Players will reach
into a portal to grab creatures in order to summon them with pearls.  Each creature when summoned yields victory
points and possibly an immediate or an ongoing ability.  The game ends when a player collects 12 points
worth of creatures. Each player will gather magic pearl cards to use to summon
characters.  Pearl cards are numbered 1
through 8.  Creature cards bring both
victory points and special abilities. 
Points range from 0 to 5 on each creature.  Most creatures require from 2 to 4 pearl
cards to activate.
Portal Of
Heroes is a game of
efficiency.  Each player has a hand limit
of 5 pearl cards and is limited to a maximum of 2 creature cards in their
portal.  In the center play area there
will be a draw deck of creature cards of which 2 will be displayed face-up, a
draw deck of pearl cards of which there will be 4 displayed face-up.  Each player will take 3 actions on their
turn.  Actions include taking a pearl
card, sweeping and replacing the face-up pearl cards, taking and placing a
creature card onto your portal, and spending pearl cards to activate one of
your creatures.  Once a creature is
activated it moves out of your portal and into your scoring area which opens up
your portal for another creature.
Portal Of
Heroes is moves at a brisk
pace.  Because of the tight nature of
choices, players don’t have too many options to consider.  Picking the right creatures to move to their
portal is the toughest decision you have to make.  Do you go for a high point creature with no
special ability, or should you try to activate low point creatures with
powerful abilities?  This one will fit
easily in a backpack or suitcase. It is a perfect game for someone on the go.

New from Space Cowboys is Unlock! Escape Adventures, a cooperative card game inspired by escape rooms. Initially, they’ve introduced 3 separate stand alone adventures. Using a free app, players are given a 60-minute time limit, clues, and code checks.

On the cards that you reveal from your deck, you’ll find items scattered around the room and machines that must be strategically manipulated. Ultimately, by logically combining red and blue cards (such as a key and a locked cabinet) and by solving challenging puzzles, you’ll be able to gain new cards from the deck and advance closer to your solution.

After being missing in action for a time, Akrotiri is now back in stock.  Akrotiri is a 2-player game aimed at those who appreciate a deeper strategy game.  A tile placement, hand management, and pick-up and delivery game.

Players place land tiles to the central game board in order to make it match the maps they have in their hand. On the various islands surrounding Thera, players will gather resources and ship them back to Thera to sell in order to funds voyages in search of temples. Players earn points by excavating the bigger harder to find temples. Both players also have secret goal cards that aren’t revealed until the end of the game.
