Game Profile: Dice City

Roll Build Win in this dice-crafting
tactical game!

Classification Strategy Game
Mechanics Dice Rolling, Resource Management
Publication AEG, 2016
Ages 14+
Time 45
Players 1 – 4
Description
Dice City introduces the kingdom of Rolldovia.  Each player gets to build on their own large
player board featuring 30 beginning buildings.
These buildings yield 1 of 3 types of resources; stone, wood, and iron,
or 1 army strength value, or 1 victory point.
Five buildings will be activated per player each turn.  Players each roll a set of 5 different
colored dice (white, red, blue, yellow, and black) and place them on their
player board with the white die in the white row on the building corresponding to
the number rolled.  They will do the same
for each other colored dice.  On their
turn, players will collect all the resources triggered by the buildings rolled.  Then with these resources they will buy more
powerful buildings to place in their city covering up beginning buildings.  There are lumber mills to double wood
production, quarries to double stone production and mines to double iron
production.  Also, there are regular army
buildings to double military might and other special ability buildings
available to acquire.  The central
marketplace offers a combination of 8 buildings at any time.
The object of the game
is to score the most points.  Some
buildings yield points when they are activated by your dice but most will have
an end-of-game point value.  Victory
points can also be gained by using your military might to defeat bandits, or by
using your resources to acquire trade ships.
The game typically ends when all of the bandits have been killed or 2 of
the 3 piles of trade ships have been acquired.
There are a couple of
things that really make this game cool.
Players can choose which buildings on their board to cover.  You are not restricted to covering production
buildings with newly acquired production buildings.  You can cover resource producing buildings
with military or specialty buildings and vice versa.  Players can only hold 1 resource of each type
at the end of their turn.  Players cannot
stockpile. This forces players to their resources as efficiently as
possible.  Players can mitigate less
desirable dice rolls by sacrificing a die in one row to move a die in another
row 1 space to the right or left.
In Dice City, there are several strategies to pursue, a ton of tactical decisions to be mad and ample opportunity to moan and groan about bad dice rolls.

We have an open copy of Dice City available in our Demo Games
Library for you come in and try.

Game Profile: Quadropolis

As mayor of a growing city you control whether your citizens will live in an urban paradise or an urban jungle.
Classification Family Strategy Game, City Building
Mechanics Tile Placement, Set Collection
Publication Days Of Wonder, 2016
Ages 8+
Time 30 – 60
Players 2 – 4
Description
Quadropolis is a game with easy
mechanics and deeper game play than it first appears.  With double-sided individual player boards
and double-sided architect tiles,
Quadropolis provides two levels of play; Classic which allows for an easier
discovery of the game mechanics and various strategies, and Expert which
introduces new buildings and some rule changes to provide more challenge.
The Classic game lasts
4 rounds with players taking 4 turns per round.
The central game board has 25 squares laid out in a 5×5 grid where
various types of building tiles are randomly placed at the beginning of each
round.  Each round has its own set of
buildings.  A player’s turn consists of playing
1 of their 4 architects next to a column or row on the central game board,
taking the building tile associated with the number on that architect, and
placing the building tile on the most advantageous space on their own city
board also corresponding with the number of that architect.  Each player has 4 architect tiles numbered 1
through 4.  On a round, players must use
each architect and can only use each one only once.  As each round progresses, it gets
increasingly more difficult to get the building you want with the architects
you have left.  Just to make things
interesting, there is an Urbanist pawn that gets placed where the last
building was taken.  The next player
cannot not claim a building in the row or column that is occupied by the Urbanist.
When played on a
player’s individual city board, buildings can bring inhabitants, energy units,
or victory points.  Inhabitants and
energy units will be used to activate buildings at game end.  Only activated buildings will be scored.  Balance between buildings, inhabitants, and
energy units is essential. Players with unused inhabitants and energy units
will receive one negative victory point for each.
After 4 rounds of 4
turns each have been completed, each of the 6 different types of buildings are
scored.  Tower blocks are scored by how
high they are up to a max. of 4 floors.
Shops are scored by the number of inhabitants they have attracted as
customers.  Public service buildings
score by the number of different sectors they occupy.  Parks score based on the number of Towers
adjacent to them.  Factories score for
having Shops and Harbors adjacent to them.
And Harbors score by how many in a row and/or column.  The player with the most victory points wins.
Once the Classic game
is mastered, flip the architect tiles and the player’s city boards over to the
expert side.  Architect tiles are now
numbered 1 through 5 and are all placed in a central pool for every player to
pull from.  Player’s city boards have a
fifth sector to fill and another building type to construct, the Office
Towers.  In addition, there will be 5
rounds of 4 turns each.  Office Towers
are scored based on a combination of adjacency and number of floors.  Scores for all other buildings are amped up
for the additional type of building, additional sectors and/or additional rows
and columns.

Play the family
friendly Classic mode for a quicker and lighter game.  Go to the Expert mode when you are looking
for a deeper gaming experience.  Either
way
Quadropolis will keep you engaged throughout.

Isle Of Skye
Mayfair Games

Classification Strategy Game
Mechanics Tile Placement, Auction
Publication Mayfair Games, 2015
Ages 8+
Time 60
Players 2 – 5
Description
In Isle Of Skye each player gets to construct their own
island.  During the game players will draw
and price landscape tiles that will be used to build the islands, carefully
purchase landscape tiles from their opponents, and manage their money to best
take advantage of the 4 randomly selected scoring tiles.  After 6 short but intense rounds, the player
with the most points will be the winner.
Before the start of
the game, 4 of the available 16 scoring tiles are randomly selected and placed
on the scoreboard in positions A through D.
Each scoring tile will be scored 3 times during the game.  After round 1 only the A tile will be
scored.  Round 2 scores tile B.  Thereafter scoring gets more interesting;
with scoring tiles A and C scored after Round 3, tiles B and D after Round 4,
tiles A, C, and D after Round 5, and finally tiles B, C, and D after Round
6.  There is some additional scoring for
certain landscape tiles with scroll on them and for money held after the round.
Each round starts with
an income phase.  There the fun begins.  Each player draws 3 landscape tiles randomly
from a bag.  Players then simultaneously
and secretly decide which of one of their three landscape tiles to discard and
the price of their remaining two.  When
all players are ready, they lift their player screens to reveal discards and
prices.  Next, in turn order each player
has the opportunity to buy 1 and only 1 tile from another player at that player’s
set price.  After each player makes a buy
decision everyone must buy any of their landscape tiles not purchased by an
opponent at their set price.  Players now
place all of the tiles they acquired this round on their island.  Terrain types must match when placing a tile,
i.e. mountains must join up to mountains, pastures to pastures, water to
water.  The only exception is roads which
do not have to follow the placement rule. Scoring takes place once the tiles
have been placed.  A new round now
begins.
Isle Of Skye is a tight strategy game.
Money management is critical.  The
first player each round needs to hold enough money to buy a tile before their
tiles are sold.  Pricing tiles is a real
mind game.  Too high, they may not
sell.  Too low, a player could be short
of money in the next round.  With 16
scoring tiles available, the game comes packed with replayability.
