Compounded
Dice Hate Me Games

Compounded is a game about building chemical compounds through careful management of elements, a fair bit of social play and trading, and just a bit of luck.

In Compounded, players take on the roles of lab managers, hastily competing to complete the most compounds before they are finished by others – or destroyed in an explosion. Some compounds are flammable and will grow more and more volatile over time; take too long to gather the necessary elements for those compounds and a lot of hard work will soon be scattered across the lab.

Newly released from Looney Labs is Batman Fluxx, the latest in their line of themed Fluxx card games.

Batman™ Fluxx
Looney Labs

It’s game night in Gotham, and everyone’s favorite Caped Crusader is on the job. Crime is running amok and no-one can win with Villains on the table — so put on your utility belts and leap into the fray to help Batman and his friends clean things up! Draw one and Play one is just the beginning… From camp to chaos, Batman™ Fluxx has something for every bat-fan!

It all begins with one basic rule: Draw one card, Play one card. You start with a hand of three cards… add the card you drew to your hand, and then choose one card to play, following the directions written on your chosen card. As cards are drawn and played from the deck, the rules of the game change from how many cards are drawn, played or even how many cards you can hold at the end of your turn.

In this week are a series of Mystery Rummy Card Game, a card game that’s a combination of traditional rummy and a good mystery and where you have a different ending in every game.

Mystery Rummy
Case No. 1
Jack The Ripper
U.S. Games Systems
The case of Jack the Ripper is reopened in this innovative card game that combines the strategies of traditional rummy with the elements of an exciting mystery.

The game features all of your favorite rules of Rummy, with card melds, points, and the like.  To go with this, the cards are all themed in a Jack the Ripper “London by Gaslight” theme.  There are victim cards, scene cards, evidence cards, and suspect cards.  To begin, someone must play a victim card before any evidence melds can be played.  Once a victim has been revealed, the players can begin placing their melds of evidence cards, which indicate which one of the 6 suspects might be the Ripper.  The more evidence cards in play, the more likely the given suspect is the infamous Ripper.

Mystery Rummy
Case No. 2
Murders In The
 Rue Morgue

U.S. Games Systems

Murders in the Rue Morgue is challenging and fun. . . a unique combination of a rummy card game and Poe’s classic mystery.

“The assassin had escaped through the window”

…and Edgar Allan Poe’s detective, Auguste C. Dupin, knows the orangutan did it! Still, Adolphe Le Bon has been arrested for the crime. Score points for compiling evidence cards and making brilliant deductions to capture the orangutan and prove your case. A stimulating game for two or three “detectives.” With four players, enjoy the strategy of partnership play!

Mystery Rummy
Case No. 3
Jekyll & Hyde
U.S. Games Systems

Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde tells the classic story of the dual nature of man.

This game of strategy, based on the famous novel, allows players to score points by making melds corresponding to the current state of the main character’s split personality. The first player to score 100 or more points wins!

The ultimate game-winning challenge is to “become” Dr. Jekyll or Mr. Hyde.  Find out who you really are!

Mystery Rummy
Case No. 4
Al Capone

In Al Capone and The Chicago Underworld players collect Evidence cards for each gangster and score points by making melds. Playing Gavel cards adds a strategic twist to the game. If a player has a complete set of Evidence cards for any member of the gang at the end of a hand, it results in bonus points and if all eight Al Capone cards are in a player’s possession—it’s a Shut Out!

Games Goes “Off The Charts”: Deus and Lanterns

Two more games went “Off The Charts” this week.  It was little too far to take the board game Deus to Mount Olympus to play on our day off, so we chose Mt. Rainier as a good substitute.

Deus
Asmodee
We picked a picnic spot in the Henry Jackson Memorial Visitor Center and Paradise Inn area on the south side as a perfect spot for a game of Deus affording us with a nice view of the peak. The weather was picture and gaming perfect.

We really Deus enjoy as a 2-player game.  There are lots of cards with different abilities and we always get to see many of them through the discard and reload action when making an offering to the Gods.

In this game I managed to build enough temples to offset Lynn’s aggressive military actions for the game win.  You don’t have to drive to a mountain to play Deus.  It’s a great strategy game wherever you chose to play.

Next we headed over to the north side of the mountain to the Sunrise Visitor Center taking in the beautiful scenery on the way.

Another picnic area afforded us the perfect spot for our next game, Lanterns

This is another of our go-to games when we’re on the go.  We really enjoy this tile laying – set collection game with colorful tiles of lanterns.  We like the fact that it scales well at 2, 3, and 4 players as well as play in about 30 minutes.

Lanterns
Renegade Games
While Lanterns is easy to learn to play it is also tactical.  How do I place and orient my tile so that I get the cards I need without giving Lynn what she needs?  Lynn did manage to out score me in points for the game win.

All in all a fun day on Mt Rainier.

We have
an open copy of both
Deus and Lanterns available in
our Demo Games Library for you come in and try.

Game Profile: Deus

The Greek Gods are into resource management.

Classification Strategy Game
Mechanics Hand Management, Modular Board, Network Buidling
Publication Asmodee, 2014
Ages 14+
Time 60 – 90
Players 2 – 4
Description
Deus is a mid-level
strategy game that will keep you coming back for more plays.  Game play takes place on a modular board that
is set up randomly in different configurations for 2, 3, and 4 players.  Each modular tile consists of a barbarian
village, a wheat field, a forest, a swamp, a mountain and 2 sea regions.  The object of the game is to accumulate more
points than the other players.  Players
gain gold, resources, abilities, and victory points by purchasing a card from
their hand and placing it in their tableau.  This purchase of the card triggers the
ability of that card and the placement of a building in one of the regions on
the board.  There are 5 different types
of building cards with matching buildings, plus a set of 16 unique temple cards
and 7 temple buildings.

One of the key elements of the game is that as cards are purchased they are placed in a player’s tableau in the column relating to its building type and above the previous placed card in that column which in turn triggers the ability of every card in this column. Beginning with the bottom card (the 1st card placed) the abilities are activated in order in which they were placed in the tableau ending with the most recently placed card. Since there are 5 buildings of a type, the 1st card in each column type can be triggered up to 5 times during the course of the game. Therefore, it is critical to get the cards placed in an order that maximizes their value.

Temple cards are the major source of victory points at game end. Each yields points in a different way. The 1st temple card can be purchased and placed in a player’s tableau in the temple column at any time. Before a player can placed a 2nd temple card he/she must not only meet its purchase cost but must have at least one building card placed in each of the 5 building columns on their tableau. The 3rd temple card requires its cost and at least 2 cards in each of the 5 building columns, and so forth as each temple card is placed in a player’s tableau.

Another key function of the building cards is their discard use (Offering action). In place of purchasing and placing a card in their tableau, a player can discard any number of cards from their hand and replace them from the draw deck. He/she will choose one of their discarded cards to activate its building type discard ability. Discarding can yield players valuable resources, gold, an increase in the number of cards in their hand, more buildings to their tableau from their supply, and victory points. The Offering action gives players an opportunity to do something positive on every turn especially when they don’t like the particular cards in their hand and to see a wide variety of cards.

Game end is triggered when one of 2 conditions occurs: all barbarian villages have been conquered or all of the temple buildings have been placed. Additional end of game points are tallied from temple cards, most resources on hand, and most gold on hand.

There is significant tension throughout Deus as players decide whether to build deep in 1 or 2 building types to maximize the abilities of the respective cards or to build buildings of all types to facilitate the purchase of point producing temples.

We have an open copy of Deus  available in our Demo Games Library for you come in and try.

Welcome squires to Medieval Academy,

it’s time to show what you’re capable of.

– Father Advean Nicolus Emilius, chairman of the Medieveal Academy

Medieval Academy
Iello
Medieval Academy, is a card drafting game where players are squires vying for Chivalry points on various game tiles played over 6 rounds.  The tiles are double sided and represent the different types of knighthood training: gallantry, jousts, tournaments, education, king’s service, quests, and charity.  Players begin with a hand of 5 cards, simultaneously choose 1 to keep and then pass their remaining cards to next player. You will continue in this manner of choosing cards to keep and passing until you have 5 cards again. Then in turn order players will play one of their cards. The cards advance you around the tracks on the knighthood tiles where you’ll earn your Chivalry points.  Players must wisely draft the cards that are the most useful to them and play them at the right time to move their discs up the training tracks.  At the end of turn 6, the squire who has the most Chivalry Points wins the game and is knighted by King Arthur!

Game Arrivals: July 23rd – 31st

Here’s a look at our most recent game arrivals:

Following in the heels of his popular hit game Splendor is Barony the next game by game designer, Marc André.

Barony
Matagot/Asmodee
Barony is a strategy game for 2 to 4 players who
will compete for power and the title of king.
Play takes place on a modular board consisting of mountains, forests,
plains, fields, and lakes hexagon tiles.
Each player begins the game as a lowly baron worth 0 points, a reserve
of knights, villages, cities, and strongholds.
To become the King, players will have to use their tactical skills to
expand their regions.  Knights serve not
only as defenders and attackers but also as the resource to create new villages
or strongholds.  Villages can be converted
to cities.  Two important elements are
the creation of cities and the accumulation of resource tokens. Cities earn you
victory points and are the primary place you can recruit additional knights.  Where you place your villages and strongholds
determines the type and value of resource tokens you receive.  Resource tokens serve as the mechanism for
upgrading your nobility rank moving from Baron to Viscount, to Count, Marquis
and then Duke.  Each progression earns
you additional victory points. The
player who first reaches the status of Duke triggers the end of game.  The player with the most points becomes King.
