Description

Castles Of Mad King Ludwig lets each player build their own castle. The question is which player will score the most points based on the 4 randomly selected scoring tiles visible to all in addition to their secret bonus scoring cards. Each player will build their castle from a selection of 10 different sizes & shapes of rooms in 7 different colors, hallways, stairs plus a starting foyer. With 24 different public scoring tiles, 27 unique bonus cards, and 75 rooms of various shapes, sizes & colors no two games are going to be the same.

The game has what I think is a brilliant mechanic at the start of each round. The starting player will be the master builder for that round and has the role of drawing and revealing the 7 rooms that will be available for purchase and determining the sale price of each room. The master builder will determine which price slot each of the rooms will be placed into with prices ranging from $1,000 to $15,000 and with only one room per price slot. In turn order beginning with the player to the left of the master builder, each player will have an opportunity to purchase one of these rooms or a hallway or stairs with the master builder purchasing last. The beauty is that each player will pay the purchase cost of the tile they want to the master builder. However, the master builder will pay the bank for the tile he/she acquires. Players add their newly acquired building to their individual castle scoring plus &/or minus points depending on its relation with adjacent rooms. In addition, a player may gain a special action bonus when any room that has been completed meaning all doors of a room are matched by doors from adjoining rooms. The game proceeds in this manner of rounds with the next player becoming the master builder. The game ends when the card deck used to bring out more rooms has been exhausted. Some scoring is done during the course of the game based on rooms played and bonuses received. Most of the points are awarded at the end when player scores are calculated for the 4 public goals and for any private goals that have been achieved.

Castles Of Mad King Ludwig has an easy rule set to get through and to understand. The game play is variable and entertaining. The role of the master build is challenging. Which rooms will opponents pay a premium for versus how high I as the master builder price the room I want and hope that room is still available at the end of the round? How will each I maximize points using the public goals and my 2 secret goals? This game packs a ton of fun into a 90 minute play time.

Game Goes “Off The Charts”: Castles Of Burgundy

Another game went “Off The Charts” this past Monday.  We headed east to do a meet-up with Ron’s sister and brother in-law and do some wine tasting in Walla Walla.

It’s never a straight line that Ron takes to our destinations. One of our stops on this trip was at Emigrant Springs State Park on Deadman’s Pass outside of Pendleton.

And, no we did not do this trip by covered wagon – it just can’t beat the convenience of an air conditioned car.  This park was a perfect spot with shade and a light breeze in which we could stretch our legs and play a game of Castles Of Burgundy.

In Castles Of Burgundy, dice set out the action options, but the players always make the final choices. Whether trading or livestock farming, city building or scientific research, many different paths lead to the prosperity and prominence of the players.

We have an open copy of Castles Of Burgundy available in our Demo Games Library for you come in and try.

Forbidden Stars: Game Play Review

Normally I’m not a war game player, but last night curiosity led me into a game of Forbidden Stars with Mike H. and Eric I.  The modular board and the cool miniatures will get you to the table.  The game play will get you to the table again. Each of the 4 factions have their own special abilities & units.  I think with me as a leader, the Chaos Space Marines were more chaotic than an effective fighting force.  It is war and it’s in space so you will place 4 orders per round over the 8 rounds. The orders allow players to conquer planets and kick others out of planets in order to build factories, cities and bastions.  You need multiples of each building and they must each occupy a different planet.  Since there are a limited number of planets, kicking people off of planets is not only entertaining but absolutely necessary.  Bastions help you defend planets.  Factories let you build more units and cities let you build more powerful units.  According to the rules the way to win is to capture objective tokens which are inconveniently located on planets behind a wall of planets controlled by another faction.  The only way to win is to build, attack and destroy accompanied by a maniacal laugh.

Game Profile: Dead Man’s Draw

What’ll be matey? Draw if you
dare.

Classification Card Game
Mechanics Press-Your-Luck
Publication Mayday Games, 2015
Ages 13+
Time 10 – 15
Players 2 – 4
Description
Dead Man’s Draw is an incredible
filler game for when you want something light.
This press-your-luck pirate-themed game features a deck of loot cards
and a deck of pirate trait cards. The loot cards are comprised of 10 different types
– cannon, oracle, treasure map, anchor, chest, etc. with each type having a
specific pirate like action.  Additionally,
each loot card indicates an end of game scoring point value.  A Cannon’s action is to send a card from an
opponent’s scoring area to the discard pile, whereas the Oracle lets you preview
the next card on the loot deck. The pirate trait cards each enhance the ability
to use one of the 10 types of loot.  A Scavenger’s
trait allows the player with that trait card to keep the cards stolen from an
opponent with a cannon’s action instead of sending them to the discard pile.

The object in a game of
Dead Man’s Draw is to have the best stash of loot in your
play area when the loot deck is exhausted.
Each player begins the game with a pirate trait card.  A player’s turn consists of turning over the
top card of the loot deck, placing it face up in the play area and completing
the action associated with that loot type.
Next, the player decides whether to continue to draw again or not.  The player can quit and take the face up cards
placing them in their scoring area, or they can continue to draw more loot
cards.  Anytime a second card of the same
loot type is drawn the player busts and depending on the type of loot in the
play area all or most of the face up cards will go into discard pile.  So beware of the Kraken as its action
requires the player to draw and play 2 more cards many times causing a
bust.  When the loot deck is exhausted
each player adds up the highest value of each loot type in their scoring
area.  Most points wins.

Dead Man’s Draw is 15 minutes of pirate fun in a small box ready for play at home, at the beach, or in the local coffee shop.

We have an open copy of Dead Man’s Draw available in our Demo Games
Library for you come in and try.

Game Goes “Off The Charts”: La Isla

It’s been a while since we’ve taken a game “Off The Charts”.  So, this past Monday we headed for the Oregon coast where to our surprise the temperature was a full 30 degrees cooler than in Gresham.  The ocean was pretty calm and the skies were a little overcast with a lite mist – still better that the hot sun in Portland.

At Beverly Beach we found an empty picnic table for a
game of
 La
Isla
a game about finding and capturing 5 different
extinct species of animals
.

With a perfect spot next to a dark woodsy area we were off to see if there were any extinct Dodo’s, Golden Toads, or maybe even a Giant Fossa or two to be found.

We were each racking up our collection of extinct species.  However, Ron kept getting to the right place with key resources and the right cards to get that next animal into his collection. In the end I couldn’t beat him.  A fun game and a fun day.
