In follow up to their smash hit game, Splendor is Black Fleet from Space Cowboys.

In Black Fleet, each turn has players in control of 3 ships, each performing different actions to win doubloons. Accumulating doubloons to buy your victory card is the goal to winning.  Player’s use their merchant ship to transport goods to ports to obtain doubloons. Their pirate ship is out on the open seas waylaying their opponents merchant ships, seizing their goods, and then burying it on one of the treasure islands.  Additionally, on each round a player will maneuver one of the 2 common navy ships in an effort to sink an opponent’s pirate ship.  There are movement cards, fortune cards, and development cards to help you along the way.  This game looks cool out of the box with a big colorful game board, ships, and metal doubloon coins.

New from Fantasy Flight is Age of War by world-acclaimed game designer Reiner Knizia. Other games by Reiner Knizia that you might recognize include Tigris & Euphrates, Lost Cities, Loot, Ra, Battle Line, and Ingenious.

In this fast-pace game, players are Japanese feudal lords trying to conquer castles and unite the warring clans. The game consists of 7 custom dice with symbols that make up the military force, and 14 castle cards that have victory points both as a stand-alone claim and as a clan set.  On a turn a player will roll the 7 dice and try to fulfill the battle requirements on one of the castle cards. They will continue rolling until they have either exhausted their dice or have conquered and claimed the castle.  Additionally, players can conquer their opponent’s castles adding them to their claims.

Romans Go Home!
Vainglorious Games/
Lui-même

When those rotten Romans invade your homeland of Caledonia, there’s nothing for it to but to give them a proper Scottish heave-ho. Which would be a lot easier, if those other clans would just get out of the way…
Each player adopts a different clan of ancient Scotsmen bent on destroying Hadrian’s Wall and sending the Romans back to Rome. Play your warriors strategically, then reveal them and use their special abilities to defeat the invaders – and more importantly, to show your rival clansmen that your clan is the strongest of them all.

Sushi Go!

Another quick-playing game in this week is Sushi Go!, a fun family card game about delectable sushi.  Players are trying to put together the best sushi combinations as various ingredients pass into their hands.  Careful selection will be necessary as you will only choose one card to play from your hand before passing the remainder of your hand to the player on your left.  Play your chosen card then pick up your new hand and repeat the process.  Chose the chopsticks card and play an extra card.  Score points for making the most maki rolls or for collecting a full set of sashimi.Triple your score by dipping your nigiri in wasabi.

Games Go “Off The Charts”: Pagoda and King’s Forge

Last week the weather was ideal for more games to go “off the charts”.  The opportunity presented itself when we were in the Pendleton area.
We found Battle Mountain State Park was the perfect spot to play two of the newest games added to our Demo Games Library.
The first game we played was Pagoda,
a tactical 2-player game.

Pagoda
We like this not only for the game play but also for the colorful components. When the game is over you have constructed several vibrant 3-dimensional pagodas.
The second game we played was King’s Forge.
King’s Forge

In this game we use multicolored dice to collect more dice then roll dice to forge objects ranging from the dice of deceit to the holy hang grenade. We especially love the first player token, appropriately it’s the black anvil sitting on the table.

Classification 2-Player Strategy Game

Publication AEG, 2014
Ages 8+
Time 30 – 45
Players 2
Description

Pagoda is a great game for someone looking for a quick playing tactical 2-player game. An additional bonus is that the 3D Pagodas are built with colorful columns and tiles giving the game a cool look and feel. The object of the game is to score more points than your opponent. Game play is centered on a small board with room to construct 6 Pagodas. A finished Pagoda consists of 4 floors with each floor having 4 columns of one color topped with a tile of the color of the columns. The 4th floor must be capped off with a spire of 2 columns that are the same color as the 4th floor tile. Once the 3rd Pagoda is finished the game is over ant the player with the most points will win.

Players begin the game with 5 cards, one of each color of the types of columns and floor tiles, placed face up in front of them plus 2 random cards in their hand. Players can take up to 3 actions per turn. It costs one action per column built, and one action per floor tile placed. One point is awarded for each column built on the ground floor, 2 points for each column built on the 2nd floor, with 3 points for those on the 3rd floor and 4 points earned on the 4th floor. One point is awarded for each floor topped with a tile. Five points goes to the player who tops the 4th floor with a spire that consists of a double column in the same color as the tile. There are a few other rules like all columns on a floor have to be the same color. When a player places a floor tile they get to claim one of 5 special abilities that can be used on a future turn. The crux of Pagoda is to know when to build on which Pagoda to maximize your points without setting up your opponent for a big score. This game is fun, tactical and pretty to look at when finished.

Pagoda available

Game Profile: King’s Forge

A crafty game where dice are
the raw materials from which you’ll forge amazing items.

Classification Strategy Game
Mechanics Dice Rolling, Pattern Building
Publication Game Salute, 2014
Ages 13+
Time 60
Players 2 – 4
Description
The folks from Clever Mojo (now merged with Game Salute) have done it again.  King’s Forge follows
on the heels of the games
Alien Frontiers and Sunrise City.

King’s Forge employs
relatively straight forward mechanics to create 60 minutes of thought provoking
play.  The objective is to successfully craft
and claim 4 item cards before anyone else does. Maybe the King wants a new
battle axe of valor, or a new shield, or a crossbow for the Queen.  Some items can be easy to craft while others
are more difficult. Each item card has a requisite of resources and a minimum value
amount necessary to craft it.  Resources
are represented by various colors of dice.
In this game it will take rolling the right color dice with the right value
in order to craft and claim an item.  For
example, a player needs to roll one black metal die with a minimum value of 3
and 2 red gems dice each with a minimum value of 3 to craft and claim the
Wizard’s Goblet.
Each player begins the
game with 5 black die representing metal.
These dice will be used to start building your supply of resource dice.  The following resource dice will be obtained
throughout the game: green – wood, red – gems, and blue – magic with each progressively
harder to obtain.  Dice are obtained
through the use of Gather cards.  Gather
cards represent various merchants and locations such as the alchemist, the peddler,
mines, bazaar, tavern, etc. and has 2 possible actions.  A Mill card allows a player to give up 2 die
of their choice to obtain 2 green wood dice as their action or to give up one
blue magic or red gem die and allocate 3 other dice from their supply to obtain
3 green wood and 2 metal dice as a second possible action.  During each round players will cycle through
a group of Gather cards building their resource dice supply.  Then they will roll any of their dice not
used in building their supply to complete a crafted item.  Dice can be used to build ones supply or to
craft, but not both.  After the crafting
phase there is a clean-up phase before the cool looking anvil 1st
player token is passed to the player on left.
Replayability of King’s Forge is built into the 2 decks of cards.  There are 18 Gather cards of which 11 will be
used each game.  There are 32 Craft item
cards of which only 13 will be used in a 4-player game.  Randomizing the gather cards definitely
changes the way a player builds their fistful of dice.  Randomizing the Craft item cards dramatically
affects the way players approach the game.
Back-to-back games will feel completely different based on the Gather
and Craft cards in play.

We have an open copy of King’s Forge available in our Demo
Games Library for you come in and try.

Here’s a look at some of the games hitting the shelves:

Just released from Clever Mojo through Game Salute is King’s Forge, a crafty game where  dice are the raw materials from which players will forge increasingly more amazing items to win the king’s favor.
King’s Forge
Clever Mojo/Game Salute
In King’s Forge, players are peasant craftsmen and craftswomen hoping to advance their careers and win a place at court and the title of King’s Forge.   A variety of dice represent both the currency and the raw materials (metal, wood, gems, and magic) used to craft items from the King’s list. In the Gather phase, your dice are used to purchase more dice and dice roll-modifiers. Unused dice are then rolled in the Crafting phase in an attempt to meet the requirements to construct the items on the King’s list. An early lead is not a sure path to victory and other players will out-maneuver and out-build you whenever possible. Careful dice management, advance planning, fierce competition, and nail-biting luck are what it takes to win the game.

Another new game is Seventh Hero, a  card game of legendary champions from Alderac Entertainment Group (AEG).
Seventh Hero
Alderac Intertainment Group

The Prophecy warns of the return of Maedoc the Corruptor, and of his dark hand stretching once more upon the land.  It also speaks of 7 heroes, bound by destiny to defeat him.

In Seventh Hero, players recruit wandering heroes but must remain vigilant against some of Maedoc’s minions who pose as heroes in order to find and eliminate the true seven. The game consists of cards representing one of 7 different heroes. Each hero has a special ability that can be used once.  Players begin with 2 different heroes placed face up in front of them forming their starting hero group and a hand of 5 cards.  During the game, players will send cards around the table, face down. Players take turns choosing whether to recruit the wandering hero or to pass.  One must be careful when recruiting the wandering hero.  If it matches one you already have then you must discard the matching pair. The player who collects 6 of the 7 heroes immediately wins the game, otherwise the player with the most heroes when the deck runs out of cards wins.
