Board Game Arrivals: Aug. 26th – Sept 1st

Several newly released games hit our shelves this week.  Here’s what came in:


Bruges
Z-Man Games

Just released from Z-Man Games is Burges, another by game designer Stefan Feld.  This Stefan Feld designed game is a little lighter than his normal games.


Belgium, 15th Century.  The first stock market opens its doors.  All of Europe has set its eyes on the wealthy and influential city of Bruges.

In Bruges, players strive to gain influence with the merchants, bureaucrats, nobles, and the many others that rule the city.  With their help, players hope to gain prestige, reputation, and power.  One must be careful as disasters lurk nearby.  Use a little luck, some tactical thinking, and maybe some shady maneuvers on your way to victory.

Rise of Augustus
Hurrican



Another newly released game is Rise of Augustus from Hurrican. This game was nominated for the Spiel des Jahres Award (German Game of the Year) this year.

Rise of Augustus is a 30-minute light strategy game that uses an interesting twist for selecting resources.  Resources are used to mobilize legions, to control provinces, and to influence senators on the way to gaining victory.

Trains
Alderac Entertainment
Also new in this week and also just released is Trains by Alderac Entertainment Group.

Trains is a deck-building game where you are building the
strongest system of rails throughout Tokyo or Osaka. Your cards not
only allow you to buy other cards to tune your deck, but they will also
allow you to buildtrain stations and rail lines along the game board.

The goal of the game is to have the most powerful railway network. You accomplish this by collecting Victory Points from cards, railways, and stations.

Also hot off the presses, is Forbidden Desert: Thirst for Survival from Gamewright.  This is another game by designer, Matt Leacock who designed  Pandemic and Forbidden Island.

Newly released from Steve Jackson Games is Castellan.  

2 players work together to build a castle but compete to control it.  Wall and tower pieces link together to form courtyards which you’ll try to claim with a Keep.  You must be clever in placing your wall and tower pieces so that you gain as towers in your courtyards without adding points to your opponent.

Pandemic: In The Lab
Z-Man Games
New from Z-Man Games is this new expansion to the popular cooperative game, Pandemic.  Pandemic: In The Lab brings new roles, 2 add-on’s to the challenges in the On The Brink expansion, and these 3 new ways to play:

Lab Challenge – take samples and develop cures in the lab.  Cures must be developed in the lab before they can be discovered.

Solo Game – you, with a little help from the CDC, are on your own.

Team Challenge – cooperate with a partner against rival teams racing to cure and eradicate, prevent outbreaks, and gain prestige points.  Prestige points are gained when a team meets the goal outlined on their specific goal card.  The team with the most prestige points at the end of the game wins.

Also newly released is Scoundrels of Skullport from Wizards of the Coast, an expansion to Lords of Waterdeep:The Board Game.  Scoundrels of Skullport adds a new faction, The Gray Hands, allowing up to 6 players and also contains these two new modules:

Undermountain – a vast and multilevel dungeon beneath Mount Waterdeep…  The focus is on new quests with great demands and greater rewards.


Skullport  – aka: Port of Shadow, is nestled in the heart of Undermountain, deep below the streets of Waterdeep… The focus is on a new resource – Corruption and the risks associated with being corrupt.

Adding to our kids section is Set Junior just out from Set Enterprises.


Set Junior, aimed at kids ages 3+ contains a two-sided board.  On one side kids learn what a set is by matching their tile to a tile on the board.  Start to recognize Sets while matching color, number and symbols.  Once familiar with what a makes a Set, flip the board over and play Side 2.  On Side 2 kids can race to find as many Sets as they can.

Table Top Season 2: Lords of Waterdeep

It’s  time for another episode in the Table Top biweekly series hosted by Wil Wheaton of Star Trek fame, on Felicia Day’s Channel Geek and Sundry.  Today Wil and his friends are playing Lords of Waterdeep, a Euro-style strategy board game from the world of Dungeons & Dragons.

Description

The woods are old-growth, dappled with sunlight.  Delicious mushrooms beckon from every grove
and hollow.  Morels may be the most
sought-after in these woods, but there are many tasty and valuable varieties
awaiting the savvy collector.  Bring a
basket if you think it’s your lucky day. 
Forage at night and you will be all alone when you stumble upon a
bonanza.  If you’re hungry, put a pan on
the fire and bask in the aroma of chanterelles as you sauté them in butter.

Morels
is a light strategy card game for 2 players. 
The object of the game is to collect and cook a better collection of
mushrooms that your opponent.  On a turn,
a player can take a mushroom that is near them at the edge of the forest or with
the aid of a walking stick, trek deeper into the forest to snatch a tastier
variety.  Nearby mushrooms that are not
selected move into a decay pile after every turn.  There is a short window of opportunity to
take mushrooms from the decay pile, but if you do, you must take everything in
the pile.  This could contain things you
need like mushrooms, frying pans, butter, or cider, etc.  However, the pile could also contain the
deadly Destroying Angel Mushroom.  This
mushroom makes you ill and limits your size for several rounds.  The game continues until the deck of forest
cards is exhausted.  The player with the
best sets of mushrooms in frying pans in front of them will be the winner.  Mushrooms must be collected in sets of 3 or
more and can be spiced with butter and/or cider for bonus points.  May the best forager win!

Game Goes “Off The Charts”: Ticket To Ride

You just gotta love August in the Pacific Northwest.  August is huckleberry season and yesterday was the perfect day for a trip into the mountains on a quest for the sometimes elusive huckleberries and for a relaxing game or two.

We found an ideal spot nestled among the trees and a small lake.

This is another of our favorite traveling games as it fits nicely in our backpack. It has even been to several destinations featured in the game.
