Another new game has arrived in this week.

Santa Monica
 AEG

New from AEG is Santa Monica a tableau building beachy-themed game for 2 to 4 players  that plays in 35 to 40 minutes.
Players will compete to create their most appealing oceanfront community whether it be a quiet one centered on nature, or a bustling with one fun shops and tourists, or something in between that also draws the locals.  Players will draft beach and street feature cards from the central play area to put in their oceanfront – either in their top row beach scene or their bottom row street.  The features on these cards can work together with chains and adjacencies to gain victory points.  In addition, there are wooden meeple tokens that represent locals, tourists, and VIP’s that move around your oceanfront community with each type having a specific function.   Gain and spend wooden sand dollar tokens to utilize the special actions on the common sand dollar action tiles.  At the end of the game, the player with the most points wins.
Watch this Dice Tower video to learn more about Santa Monica.

Game Profile: Replicants

Publisher:  Attention Span Games, 2017

Players:  2 – 6

Time:  45 – 60 Min.

Replicants is a small card game about building the best set of robot workers,
called Replicants.
  Each replicant has
four levels with each new level bringing points and a new ability at its level
4.
Each player begins the game with one Replicant
set at level 4 and three Replicants set at level 1.
These will be selected from a hand of five
cards dealt at the start of the game.

Mechanically, the game play is straight forward.  Each round a grid of various resource cards is
laid out in the center play area randomly.
Each player, in turn order, will place one of their four drones on the
grid to acquire two of the resources.  Play
continues until all players have played their four drones.  In the next phase, using their resource
cards, players can upgrade as many Replicants as they desire.  Any Replicant upgraded to level 3 gains the
player an additional Replicant from the draw deck.  The cost in resources to upgrade each
Replicant is different and clearly visible on the Replicant card.  To upgrade to level 2 costs two specific resources,
four resources are required to upgrade to level 3, and six are needed to
upgrade to a level 4.  The object of the
game is to be the first player to gain 36 victory points.  Level 1 Replicants have no victory point
value, level 2 Replicants are each worth 1 victory point, level 3’s are 3
victory points, and level 4’s are worth 6 victory points.

Replicants comes packaged in a really small box with plenty of cards to handle up
to six players.  This game plays much
bigger than the size of the box suggests.
Another plus is that designer Will Carson is from the Seattle area.

Game Profile: Railways of Nippon

Publisher:  Eagle-Gryphon, 2018

Players:  2 – 4

Time:  90 – 120 Min.

For those people who love network building games, Railways
of Nippon
takes the networking of Ticket
To Ride
and adds some serious economic elements, some
auction bidding for player order, and a whole lot of interesting decision
making.
The object of the game is to
earn the most points by building rail lines across a map of Japan to deliver goods
cubes of different colors to the appropriate cities.
Cubes travel across completed lanes from city
to city on tracks that can be expensive to build.
Distance is limited by the power of your
engine.
For a price, engines can be
upgraded.

Each round starts with an auction bid for first player.  There are times when going first will be
essential for a player to build before everyone else, or to move a goods before
another player takes it a different direction, or to grab a particular railroad
operations card that is now available.  A
new card is revealed at the start of each round and they can provide some great
special abilities.  After the auction,
each player gets three actions to build, move, etc., at one action at a time in
turn order.  After three actions income
is rewarded for how far a player has progressed on the income track.  Moving up the income track is accomplished
primarily by delivering cubes on your rail line.

Money is more than a little tight.
It must all be borrowed from the bank in $5,000 bonds.  Each of these bonds cost a player interest during
the income phase and points at the end of the game.  Borrow too much and a player could struggle
getting enough income.  Borrow too little
and a player could be left behind by more aggressive players.  It is a great balancing act.  Game end is triggered when a certain number
of cities have been completely emptied of goods cubes.

Railways
of Nippon
brings a great deal of replay value.  The goods cubes are placed randomly at the
start of the game.  Since cubes must be
delivered to a city of the same color, purple cube to purple city, etc. each
game will play different from the last.
If you are looking for network building with some serious head
scratching economics,
Railways of Nippon may fit the bill.

New Game!
Margraves of Valeria

Margraves of Valeria
is the latest game in the Valeria series from Daily Magic Games.  This is a hand-building worker placement game. – – 2 to 5 players – – 60 to 120 minutes game time

Players are Margraves, military commanders working their way around the Kingdom of Valeria gathering resources, building towers, employing knights, and slaying monsters in order to gain influence in the guilds for end of game victory points.  Turns are straight forward.  Play a citizen card from your hand and perform one of four possible power actions. Both the Pennant and Citizen power options come from the card and provide a variety of actions such as gaining resources, gold, deploying knights, moving your Margrave to a location which in turn can activate additional actions, and slaying monsters.  Build and Recall power actions come from your player board. Building towers gains you additional benefits as well as influence in your guilds.  Recall gets your citizen cards back into your hand and acquiring new citizen cards. Each guild track represents a specific icon or clan.  The key is to move up the guild tracks that match with the icons on your citizen cards, prestige tiles that you gained, and from the location of your towers.  Additionally, score points for gems, gold, resources and different banner flags that you have at the end of the game.

Margraves of Valeria
Margraves is the most complex of the Valeria series.  It takes elements of some the earlier games and pulls them together to create a little longer game with ease of play, plus a beautiful artwork. Featuring a little deck-building, a little worker-placement, and some resource management makes for a fascinating venture into the realm of Valeria.
