Description

Arena Roma II is a stand-alone 2 player war card game from game designer Stefan
Feld.
The struggle for
predominance in Rome hasn’t been decided yet – the die has not yet been
cast!  In Arena Roma II players use character cards and building cards
to populate their side of an icon bar.  Each of the cards brings a unique ability to
attack, to defend, or to generate victory points.  The object of the game is to either run your
opponent completely out of victory points or to have more victory points than
your opponent when the bank of victory point tokens is exhausted.  One way to make sure your opponent is low on
victory points is to destroy one of their characters or buildings.  The first phase of each turn forces a player
to give back a victory point for each vacant space on their side of the icon
bar.  Three dice are rolled on each turn
to determine which characters or buildings can be activated.  Additionally, the dice can be used to obtain gold
that is necessary to cover the cost to play characters and buildings or used to
draw additional cards into your hand for strategic placement later.
The secret to success is
learning when and where to place characters and buildings to inflict as much
damage as possible on your opponent while amassing victory points for yourself.

A

Arena Roma II is

Game Arrivals: May 19th – 25th

More new games arrived in this week.  Here’s some of this week’s arrivals:

Ascension – Rise of Vigil
Stone Blade Entertainment

New power stirs in Vigil!  Just out from Stone Blade Entertainment is this new stand-alone Ascension expansion by game designer Justin Gary.  Ascension: Rise of Vigil can be played as a stand-alone game for 2-4 players or combined with any other Ascension deck-building games increasing the number of players to 6.

Rise
of Vigil
introduces treasure cards to the game system,
with all treasure cards in this set being “Energy Shard”. When a
treasure card is drawn from the shared deck, you place it in the empty space in
the shared pool, then continue to draw until you reveal a hero, monster or
construct to cover the treasure. When you acquire or defeat that top card, you
also gain the treasure, which is added to your deck like hero and construct
cards. When you play a treasure from your hand, you immediately draw another
card from your deck; more importantly, you can use the energy on these cards to
activate special powers on certain heroes, constructs and monsters…

Navegador
Rio Grande Games

Navegador is a challenging strategy game for 2-5 players with a little luck, because no one knows exactly what to expect when discovering new sea regions.

Players represent wealthy trade dynasties which take part in building up the Portuguese colonial empire. The first aim is to explore the unknown sea regions and found colonies. Use the sugar, gold, and spice resources in the colonies to finance the building ships, factories, shipyards, and churches. Use a rondel to plan actions and build the best combinations of assets to win.

Coming Soon: Munchkin Pathfinder

Great news for Munchkin and Pathfinder Role-playing fans. Steve Jackson Games is giving the Munchkin treatment to Pathfinder.  The game combines the features of the Pathfinder setting with the cheeky humor of Munchkin.

Here is an excerpt from Steve Jackson Games’ Daily Illuminator news page:

…”We’re honored to be working with Paizo on Munchkin Pathfinder, ” said Andrew Hackard, Munchkin Brand Manager for Steve Jackson Games.  “Pathfinder is a wonderfully rich world to play in.”

We all love Munchkin here at Paizo Publishing, so this match was a no brainer,” Lisa Stevens, CEO of Paizo Publishing stated matter of factly.  “But of course,” she whispered conspiratorially, “I really just wanted to see John Kovalic draw our iconic sorceress, Seoni!”

Potential Cover Art

…Munchkin Pathfinder will be a 168-card set, designed by Steve Jackson and Andrew Hackard and illustrated by John Kovalic.  It will be playable as a standalone game or with any other Munchkin set… Fall 2013

Game Profile: Antike Duellum

Ancient history comes alive in this 2 player war game.

Mechanics Area Control/Influence, Area Movement, Hand Management
Theme Ancient Civilization
Publication Rio Grande Games, 2012
Ages 13+
Time 60-90
Players 2

Description

Two mighty, ancient empires sail
the seas, found new cities, erect glorious temples, and develop new
technologies.  However territories and
resources are limited and soon peaceful coexistence threatens to change to military
conflict.  Who can best manage their state
affairs?  Who can benefit their people
most when engaging the vagaries of fate?
And who has the strategic genius to lead their legions and fleets to
victory?  The answer lies in your hands.

Antike Duellum is a 2 player war game with a strong economic element.  A double sided board provides 2 scenarios: Rome
versus Carthage and Greece versus Persia.
The game also incorporates a rondel for action selection.

In the struggle for
supremacy players will choose their actions based on the 8 spots provided on a
rondel.  These actions include a) resource
production of marble, iron, and gold, b) construction of city walls and temples,
c) troop movement, d) armament of military units, e) military recruitment, and f)
purchase of scientific know-how.  Resources
are expended for actions involving military recruiting and armament, erecting city
walls and temples, and acquiring scientific know-how.  Building walls in your cities increases a city’s
defenses while temples will increase a city’s resource production.  Advantages for gaining scientific know-how includes
increasing your military land and sea movements, additional resource
production,  added strength in your
cities defenses, and the ability to trade resources with the bank.
Victory points are
acquired by building additional cities, building temples, acquiring scientific
know-how, the destruction of opposing temples, and the amassing of a large fleet
of galleys.

Antike Duellum moves quickly through the opening rounds as
players build cities and military strength.
It doesn’t take long for things to get interesting as military units don’t
have far to go to get in each other’s way.
Players will need to build a tight economic engine with the cities, plan
their moves on the rondel well and leverage every turn to gain tactical
advantages across the board to be successful.
The first player to outmaneuver their opponent on the way to 9 victory
points will be the winner.

A copy of Antike Duellum is available in our Store Demo Game Library for you to come in and try out while you are here.
