Game Profile: Fresco

Dive into the Renaissance World of the Fresco Painters & Help Restore the Ceiling of the Cathedral!

Mechanics Worker Placement, Simultaneous Action
Theme Renaissance
Publication Queen Games, 2010
Ages 10+
Time 60
Players 2 – 4
Description

Fresco is a worker placement game with a unique
beginning. Players are artisans managing their 5 workers. The first step in
each round is to plan the start of the work day. Is it better to rise early and
use the opportunity to buy paints at the market? But then you have to be
prepared for your workers mood to darken. Or would you rather sleep longer and
progress quickly because you’re in a good industrious mood? Make workers too
unhappy and lose a worker; make them happy and you can gain a worker. With your
paints proceed to the cathedral and restore a section or sections of the fresco
as you have the appropriate paints for. And don’t forget to boost your income
by painting portraits in the studio or to obtain special paint colors in the paint
mixing operation. You should also plan for a theater visit one evening – as you
have to keep your workers in a good mood after all! If you’re clever in
planning you can become the most successful fresco painter and gain the most
points.

Game Profile: Gang Of Four

A game developed on the gambling backstreets of Hong Kong.

Classification Family Card Game
Mechanics Hand Management, Set Collection
Publication Days of Wonder, 1990
Ages 10+
Time 30
Players 3 – 4
Description

Gang of Four is a game where each player tries to get rid of all their cards.  Points are awarded at the end of each round when a player gets rid of their last card.  Each remaining player gets points based on the number of cards left in their hand.  If a player gets caught with too many cards the points can be doubled or tripled, etc.  There are 64 cards in the deck consisting of 3 suits: red, yellow, green, and 4 special cards: red dragon, yellow phoenix, green phoenix, and a multicolored number one.  Each suit has 2 sets of cards, one through ten.

Play begins with whoever holds the multicolored number one. It can be played in any legal combination.  A legal combination consists of things like, pairs, 3-of-a-kind, runs, or a “Gang of Four“.  Each following player must then play a combination that beats the previously played combination or they must pass. The key is that each play must be the exact same number of cards as played in the previous combination but at a higher rank.  Once every player has passed then the last person who played gets to start a new sequence.

The only time an active player can play a different number of cards then previously played is when they play a “Gang of Four”.  A Gang of Four” is 4-of-a-kind.

Classification Children’s Game

Publication Blue Orange, 2001
Ages 7+
Time 5 – 20
Players 2
Description

Gobblet! is an abstract game played on a 16-square wooden playing board with 24 wooden pieces that are ‘nested’ into 3 stacks of 4 pieces.  The object of the game is to align 4 of your pieces in a row.  Your pieces start nested and you can only play exposed on your turn.  In turns players can either: put a new piece on the board, move one of their pieces already on the board to any empty space, or gobble up any smaller size already on the board with a bigger one.  The first player to align 4 of any size vertically, horizontally, or diagonally in a row wins.  Your memory is also tested as you try to remember what color your larger piece is covering before you move it.

Mechanics Tile Placement
Theme Bugs
Publication Gen42 Games, 2001
Ages 9+
Time 20

Description

Hive is a fantastic game for two, played with highly
tactile Bakelite tiles. The aim of the game is to be the first player to
surround your opponent’s Queen Bee using a team of assorted creatures of both
your own and your opponent’s color. Because each creature has its own way of
moving about the Hive, the game is sometimes called ‘nature’ chess’, yet
simpler rules, no need for a board and an added accessible game that can be
played anywhere. Simply great fun!

The soldier ants battle to keep control of the outside of the hive, whilst the Beetles climb up to dominate the top. Spiders moving into holding positions as the Grass Hoppers jump in for the kill. Keeping one eye on the hive and the other on your opponents reserves, the tension builds as one wrong move will see your Queen Bee quickly engulfed; …. game over!

If you’ve ever spent
hours in a waiting room, listened to “medi-speak” from a doctor, or
played paper chase with health insurance… this game is for you!

Think of Hospital as
Monopoly, with a medical twist.  It gives you a chance to laugh, instead
of cry, at “what ails you”.  Hospital is a true inter-generational
game for grandparents, parents, and children.  Adults can laugh at their
aches and pains, and kids can laugh at the whacky characters, while learning
about money, counting, and healthcare.

Hospital is the creation of Gresham native, Jim Froese.

You and your fellow adventurers explore the ruins of an ancient Incan temple, looking for turquoise, obsidian, and gold.  At every turn you must decide whether to play it safe by returning to camp with the treasure you’ve gathered so far; or to be a truly intrepid adventurer and keep on exploring.  Going farther into the ruins means risking your treasure by falling victim to giant spiders, wandering mummies, fire spouts, and venomous snakes.

Game Profile: Ingenious

A game with an Ingenious twist on whose score wins!

Classification Family Game
Mechanics Tile Placement, Pattern Building
Publication Fantasy Flight, 2004
Ages 10+
Time 45
Players 1 – 4
Description

In a game of Ingenious players use double hex tiles with various colored symbols.  Tiles are played on the board to form lines of like symbols. Scores are calculated by adding all symbols that match the played tile in all directions.  Next the player marks the score on their player board by colored symbol. This is the Ingenious part of the game; all players must try to score points with all 6 symbols. Players continue adding hexes to the playing surface until there are no possible plays left.  This marks the end of the game.  Players then look at their score by color.  The color that is the lowest on their individual score board will be their game score.  The player with the highest low score is the winner. The key to winning is to try and get all of the colors on your board as high as possible.
