New Game: Boonlake

Boonlake is a strategy game by designer Alexander Pfister whose other games include Great Western Trail, Maracaibo, Isle of Sky, and Mombasa. In Boonlake, you are pioneers settling an unexplored territory. On a central gameboard you will be placing landscape tiles and habitants in order to build houses and settlements, raising cattle, producing raw materials, and developing your infrastructure. Driving all of this is the action selection system. The speed of the game is determined by how fast players’ boats move down the river. – – 1 to 4 players – – 40 minutes per player game time

The object of the game is to score more points than the other pioneers.  Points come from a variety of sources.  The main source, and most important is from the 4 public scoring tiles revealed at the start of the game. These are chosen by the players. Each player gets to select 1 and discard 1 from their 2 randomly drawn tiles.  Regardless of the number of players, there will always be 4 scoring tiles.  In a 2 and 3-player game, the other slots will be filled by random draw.  These are all 2-part public scoring goals. The top section depicts a special project that can be completed for points anytime during the game. The bottom section indicates conditions for interim and final scoring that escalate in difficulty over the 4 scoring rounds.  Additional points come from cards purchased, houses and settlements built, plus cattle you have pastured throughout the settlements.

A player’s turn involves selecting an action tile from the 7 available on an action board.  These actions will rotate to the bottom as they are selected. Choosing one from either of the 2 bottom slots will cost you victory points. Each tile gives the active player 2 actions, while providing 1 action for all players. The slot from which the tile was taken determines the maximum number of spaces you will move your boat along the river. Like almost every other action, when you place your boat on a location, you get a bonus.  It seems like every action in the game triggers more resources or bonuses.  The movement of boats is the game timer.  When a boat passes a lock on the river it triggers a scoring round.  When the fourth lock is passed it will trigger the last round and final scoring.  Players will score final round points to determine the winner. This game puts a capital S on strategy!

New Game: Vivid Memories

Vivid Memories is a tile drafting and network building family game with colorful components and interesting game play. The theme and game play represent childhood memories and the collecting of fragments to weave a tapestry of colorful threads in your mind.

Players will collect and arrange memory fragment tokens on their player board, scoring points for connecting and completing core memory slots along the edges, matching moment tile conditions and for matching their secret aspiration (goal) tile. The player with the most points after 3 rounds wins! – – 2 to 4 players – – 30 to 45 minutes game time

Vivid Memories is played over three rounds. At the beginning of each round a number of two-sided moment tiles will be revealed with the action side face up and populated with a number of random fragment tokens creating a memory line. The reverse side of the moment tile indicates its scoring requirements. During a round players will take turns taking fragment tokens from the memory line. These fragments must then be placed in one of the hex squares on a players’ board. When the last fragment token is taken from a moment tile the player receives that moment tile. Play continues until the last fragments and moment tile has been taken from the memory line. Players will then place any moment tiles they have received during the round into slots provided on their player board with the action side up. Next, players perform up to four actions as indicated on their board and on their moment tiles to add, swap, move fragment tiles, etc. on their board to create an arrangement that will score them the most points. Moment tiles are flipped over to the scoring side once the actions have been taken.

The interim scoring phase is next. Players will score their moment tiles as indicated on the tile. Next, score points for creating a connecting line of the same color fragment tokens to the ones printed on the edge of the player board. For each scoring line one fragment token will be moved from each end of the line into empty core memory slots. Core memories are clusters of 1, 2, or 3 slots on the edge of the player board. If all the slots in a cluster are filled with fragment tokens, the core memory is complete and scores. This round is now over. Begin and play the next round in the same manner. At the end of the third round, players will also score their secret aspiration (goal) tile that they received at the start of the game. The player with the most points is the winner.

Game Profile: Raiders Of Scythia

Raiders Of Scythia
  • Publisher: Garphill Games
  • Players: 1 – 4
  • Time: 60 – 80 minutes

Raiders of Scythia is a game of raiding locations on a central game board rather than raiding your opponents. Each player begins with one hero card, one crew member card, and a worker pawn. Both the hero and first crew member are selected in a reverse player order at the start of the game. The goal is to score points by raiding locations in Cimmeria, Assyria, Persia, and Greece. Successful raiding yields points and resources. Those resources can be used to complete and score quest tiles that become available throughout the game as successful raids are completed. Some crew members and animals can also bring points at game end along with any extra resources a player may have ended up with.

Raiders of Scythia

Each player starts with one blue worker. Gray and red workers will become available as raids take place. Each player plays the entire game with only one worker. However, throughout the game, the color of their worker will change.

On each turn players will place their worker on either an action spot or a raiding location that accepts the color of that worker. For action spots, first take that action and leave the worker there for future use. Next, remove a worker from a different action spot and take that action. This now becomes their worker for their next turn. Actions allow players to gather coins needed to hire crew and provisions needed to launch raids. Additional actions allow drawing crew cards into a players’ hand, or to pay the coins to hire a crew member from their hand. Crew size is capped at five. Each crew member brings fighting strength and an ability that can be triggered by the use of an eagle. Eagles and horses can be added to a players’ crew to enhance fighting strength and special abilities. Once players have crew into fighting shape it is time to go raiding.

Alternatively, when placing on a raiding location, perform the raid, leave that worker, and take a worker assigned to that location during setup. This now becomes their worker for their next turn. Side note: workers placed in raiding locations remain there for the remainder of the game and are not available for reuse. To conduct a raid, a player must meet the crew size and provisions required by that location. Dice are then rolled that provide additional strength and to deliver wounds to their crew. Any crew member taking more wounds than they have fighting strength will parish. A successful raid will yield points and any plunder on the raided location. Plunder can consist of gold, equipment, wagons, and livestock all of which can be used later to claim quest tiles that are revealed after a successful raid.

Game end is triggered when all but two locations have been raided or, all but two quest tiles have been claimed. When one of these conditions is met, each player gets one more turn to score as many points as possible. Whoever has built the most dangerous crew and survived its many wounds will have accumulated the most points to be the champion Raider of Scythia.

New Game: Stella: Dixit Universe

Stella: Dixit Universe

Stella is a family game set in the Dixit universe.  In other words, it uses similar Dixit-type cards that are artsy and creative.  However, Stella is a different game. It is word-images association and risk management. – – 3 to 6 players – – 30 minutes game play

Stella: Dixit Universe

Image cards will be laid out and face up in a 3 X 5 grid in the center of the play area.  A common word card will be drawn randomly from the deck.  Every player will then secretly mark spots on their individual erasable player boards any of the face up image cards that they associate with the word drawn.  In turn order, a player will select one of the cards they marked to see if anyone else has that one marked as well.  Anyone who has it marked will score a point.  If no one else has it marked that player is eliminated from additional scoring that round.  The next player then picks a card they had selected. The player that selects the most cards that are unmatched will receive negative points.  In other words, check as many as you think others will match, but don’t get carried away.  The player with the most points after 4 rounds is the winner.

New Game: Corrosion

Corrosion

Corrosion is a game about running a factory.  Players will hire engineers, build machines, and build more complex chrome machines.  The game begins with each player having a simple factory.  There will also be a pool of victory point chips.  When that pool of chips is exhausted the game will end.  Points will be scored for chrome machines, and rewards gathered throughout the game.  The player with the most points wins.  – – 1 to 4 players – – 60 to 120 minutes game play

Corrosion

Each turn a player will get a chance to use one of their engineers or spin the dial in the middle of their factory one spot.  There are 4 spots total.  When the dial points to a specific side of a player’s board, resources will be generated from machines in that section, engineers played in that section on previous rounds will be put back in a player’s hand to be used again to trigger actions.  The downside to turning the dial to a location is that it causes Corrosion.  Resources in that location that have not been used will be lost.  Chrome machines will be fine.  Other machines will be lost to Corrosion.

Corrosion is a game of resource management where simple machines and one-time-use machines are resources to be used and then discarded due to Corrosion.  This game is going to be an interesting puzzly game with the twist that machines are not permanent.  They must be replaced.
