Here’s a look at some of this week’s shipment of games:

In this week is Riverboat another new game by designer Michael Kiesling. Other games he’s designed include Azul, Vikings, Heaven & Ale, Coal Baron, Mexica, Linko and many others.


Michael Kiesling goes point salad in Riverboat, a 90  minute game for 2 to 4 players that takes place along the Mississippi River during the early 19th Century. Players manage a farm where they must grow a variety of crops to ship on the Riverboats.  The game consists of 4 rounds with 5 phases to each round.  Key to the game is the drafting of the phase cards which not only determine turn order but awards a benefit to the card drafter as well as provide actions to all players.  Game play consists of drafting, worker placement, tile placement, recruiting additional workers and surveyors in addition to moving your harbor master along your dock.

Game designer Uwe Rosenberg goes fishing in his newest game Nusfjord, set in the maritime commerce heyday of a Norwegian fishing village 50 years ago.

Uwe Rosenberg puts the players in the beautiful landscape of Lofoten. In these northern climes, it is important to lead your own fishing company to success. To do this, the fleet must be enlarged, the forest cleared, new buildings built and the local elders satisfied. But the competition does not sleep! Those who need quick money can offer their shares for sale, but there is a risk that he must participate in the buyer’s catch. 

Two new features make for a varied game feeling. So the money is sown as always rare and one of the quicker and easier ways to get it is to throw shares of its own company on the market.

Monsters & Minions is the first expansion to the base game Roll Player, a dice rolling, card drafting, set collection fantasy game.  This expansion adds a fifth player in which players compete not only to construct the greatest fantasy characters, but also to gather information about the looming threat and prepare for a final showdown against the beast.  The more prepared the adventurers are for the battle, the better they’ll fare, but that information doesn’t come for free.  Listen for rumors to gather details for the fight ahead.

This week’s game arrivals has several new games.  Here’s an overview of the new games in this week:


New Game!
Altiplano
Renegade Games

After much anticipation, designer Reiner Stockhausen’s (Orléans) new game Altiplano has arrived.  Altiplano is set in the South American highlands, where players must be creative to develop the available resources and vegetation of the high plateau between the eastern and Western Andes. 


Altiplano is a resources management, bag-building game for 2 to 5 players.  There are 7 modular location tiles each representing a different region (village, market, harbor, road, farm, mine, and forest) and make up the central play area or the plateau.  Each player will have an action board, a warehouse board, a bag, a discard cart, and a player pawn.  The actions on the player’s action board correspond to the regions. In order to activate a particular action your player pawn must be on the respective region. At the beginning of the game each player receives a role card that provides their starting resource and a special ability.  There is also the option to use secret goal cards to enhance the options for game end points.  


The game is all about building your bag full of resources to use in multiple ways to generate points.  Points can come from the resources themselves, from cards claimed from various regions and from filling rows in your warehouse.  Players draw a limited number of goods each round from their bag, then those resources get allocated to set up actions for this and future rounds.  The player who handles these various options the best will be the winner.

Another new game by Reiner Stockhausen is Bohemian Villages, a dice merchant placement game for 2 to 5 players. 


The objective in a game of Bohemian Villages is acquiring the most coins.  You do this by occupying the various buildings on the various village tiles. The central play area is made up of up to 9 double-sided village boards.  Each village is made up of different buildings (bakery, dairy, flour mill, glass factory, farm, etc.).  On your turn you will roll 4 dice and place one or two of your merchants on up to two buildings.  The buildings you chose will be dependent on your dice combinations.  Each of the buildings will yield something different.  Some buildings when occupied only score at the end of the end of the game.  Others will need to have other occupants on that village card in order to score.  Additionally, once certain types of buildings are fully occupied, players can get booted out by another player.  The game ends when a player at the start of their turn has no merchants to place, final scoring takes place and the player with the most coins wins.

New from AEG is Space Base, an intergalactic dice game of fleet management for 2 to 5 players. 
Space Base

Space Base is a dice game where players draft ships (cards) into their Command Console (player board). Every turn, no matter whose turn, players harvest rewards from their command console, whether those rewards are an increase in your baseline income, credits for the next turn, influence or some other powerful effect that will lead you to victory. Players are involved and engaged on every player’s turn, from the first roll of the dice to the last.

Also new from AEG is Custom Heroes, a fantasy card crafting game for 2 to 6 players.


Description by AEG

Custom Heroes is a fast-paced, strategic game of set building and strategy. The objective of the game is to get rid of all your cards faster than your opponents. You can play sets of cards that have the same or greater value and the same number in the set as the previous player, but you have to balance the use of high value cards vs. the risk of getting stuck with low value cards in your hand as other players finish before you. 

The twist in Custom Heroes is that as you play you earn and spend Power resources which allow you to Card Craft the cards in your hand by sliding upgrades into their sleeves that overlap the card and upgrades already present to alter the value and special abilities of your cards. As each round passes the cards become more and more valuable and complex! 

Custom Heroes uses a clever system of winning victory points to determine who is the ultimate winner of the game and there is a wagering mechanic that can allow for wild swings and surprise come from behind victories.

Santa Maria is a streamlined euro-game of medium complexity, featuring elements of dice drafting and strategic engine building.  The game is low on luck and has little direct player conflict. 

At the dawn of the Sixteenth Century, colonists are flocking to the New World. Each player will lead a colony, producing resources needed to expand the colony, form shipping routes, send out conquistadors to acquire gold, and increase their religious power to recruit and train new monks. After 3 game rounds, each of which represents a year, the player whose colony is the happiest (whomever has scored the most happiness points) is declared the winner.

In the game, you expand your colony by placing polyominoes with buildings on your colony board. Dice (representing migrant workers) are used to activate buildings; each die activates a complete row or column of buildings in your colony. The buildings are activated in order (left to right / top to bottom), then the die is placed on the last activated building to block this space. It is therefore crucial where you put new buildings in your colony, and in which order you use the dice.

Inspired and initiated by Wil Wheaton (actor Star Trek fame) and Felicia Day (actress, comedian, writer), people worldwide will come together for a day dedicated to playing board games. We have participated in this event since it’s inception 6 years ago – this year being no exception. International TableTop Game Day is Saturday, April 28th.

The 10th Anniversary Edition includes updated maps for Eastern U.S. and Mexico as well as an updated and revised rulebook compendium that covers all base games and all expansions.



Vinhos Deluxe
2017 Edition
In Vinhos, players develop their estates with vineyards and wineries, producing the highest quality wines and selling them for profit and victory points.
The game takes place over six years as players work to expand their businesses in the different region of Portugal.  Hire skilled enologists and capable farmers to increase the quality of your wine, but keep a careful eye on the changing weather which will affect production at the beginning of each year.

This Deluxe Edition allows you to play 2 different versions of Vinhos: the Special Vintage 2016 and the 2010 Reserve.  The Special Vintage 2016 is less complex but with the same depth. The 2010 Reserve has some new rules, concepts, and tiles.




Fleet Wharfside
Fleet Wharfside is a stand-alone card game set in the Fleet universe.  The fleet has come home and in Wharfside its captains must fulfill contracts form local Ridback Bay Busineseses.  Each turn players will either collect fish from their fleet at the wharves or purchase a contract from the market.  Contracts provide a bonus while in play, but once they are completed the bonus goes away too.






Lords & Ladies
Lords & Ladies is a 2 to 5 player card game where you control a turn of the 20th century noble family and their servants.
The goal is to raise your family’s status through careful marriages, hiring servants and having children, all the while destroying rival families through gossip, backstabbing and using superior wit. Status is gained and lost during the game as players compete to be the first to end a round with 18 status points.









Botswana
Botswana is a family card game with animal figurines for 2 to 5 players ages 7 and above.  Botswana is fast to learn with easy and quick rules.

On safari in Botswana, you might be able to spot lions, rhinos, elephants, leopards, and zebras.  In this game you will spot them for sure!  But can you guess which ones will be worth the most at the end of this safari?   Play the right cards at the right time, collect the best animals, score the most points and win the game.

A legendary university of apprentices of the art of dungeoneering has started a new year of classes.  As the head of one of the Student Houses it is up to you to  uphold its proud traditions, and prove beyond doubt that it is your House that should have its adventurers enter the Dragonsgate that leads into a legendary dungeon nobody has returned from!

Publisher Description

Dragonsgate College is a 2 to 4 player game of dice drafting and board building.  Each turn players will allow them to perform actions, like recruiting new apprentices and professors, raising new buildings on their House’s grounds, or making progress within the gauntlet of the training dungeon.  You will make mere apprentices into true masters of dungeoneering and collect the records of their achievements in you Hall of fame.  you will further you House’s interests by Stealth or by amazing discoveries in the field of Sorcery.  And when five turns pass, you will score all of your Prestige to see, whose name will be remembered – and whose House will be revered by everyone as the most prestigious.

Sagrada
Floodgate Games

Sagrada is a dice drafting and window crafting game for 1 to 4 players that plays in 30 minutes. Players will draft and place dice to match their individual player’s board window pattern obeying color and number placement restrictions.  Public Tool cards will be available for players to spend favor tokens in order to use it’s special ability.  Three randomly selective public objective cards and an individual private objective card will drive the strategic placement of your dice.
