Here’s a look at this week’s game arrivals:

In from Fantasy Flight is Forbidden Stars, a big game of interstellar space warfare.

Forbidden Stars
Fantasy Flight

Each player will take command of one of 4 factions: the Ultramarines – the finest soldiers of the Space Marines Chapters, the World Eaters Chaos Space Marines – a band of traitors, the Craftworld Iyanden Eldar – cunning and mysterious, and the Evil Sunz Orks – a band of brutish and barbaric warriors. Each faction has faction-specific components that are distinguished by their color or their faction symbol.  Each faction seeks to reclaim lost relics and sites of power that are vital to their survival. To accomplish this, they must harvest resources, upgrade their forces, and conquer the worlds.

We got a good look at Forbidden Stars when we attended the GAMA Convention this past spring.  Tom Vasal, Rodney Smith, and 2 other players appeared to be having a ton of fun playing this game.

From Cryptozoic is Spyfall, an easy-to-learn card game of bluffing, probing questions, clever answers, and suspicion for 3 to 8 players.

Spyfall
Cryptozoic

Spyfall is played over a series of rounds. At the beginning of each round, players are dealt a secret card that is either a location card or a SPY card.  All of the players that hold a location card will have the same location be it a casino, a passenger train, a theater, a space station, etc. One and only one player will have a SPY card. No one knows what card the other players hold. The objective of the game through questions and answers, is for the spy to figure out the location of the group and for the non-spy players to figure out who holds the SPY card. Non-Spy players want to ask questions and give answers that prove that they know the location but are careful enough not to be too specific causing the Spy to easily guess the location and win. The player with the Spy card needs to sound as if they know the location when they don’t.  Everyone needs to practice a bit of subtlety.

Everyone likes a good fairy tale – happy endings right?  Well, Atlas Games has put a “Gloom“y spin on your favorite fairy tales.  Just released and in stock is Fairy tale Gloom, a follow up to Atlas Games’ award winning card game, Gloom: 2nd Edition  a game of morbid humor.

Fairy tale Gloom
Atlas Games

Let’s face it: Fairy tales are awful. Wolves and old women eat children, giants fall from the sky, and even young girls break-and-enter to steal porridge from unsuspecting families.

In Fairy tale Gloom, custom collections of fairy tale characters like Jack, Gretel, Puss in Boots, and Little Red Riding Hood do their best to stay happy, but circumstances conspire to rain woe on their sad, benighted heads.

Fairytale Gloom plays in the same fashion as Gloom where each player is trying to make their collection of characters as miserable as possible and eventually die. Conversely, you will try to bestow as much happiness on your opponents’ collection of characters trying to prevent their untimely deaths.

Fairytale Gloom is a stand-alone game that can also be combined with Gloom: 2nd Edition, Cthulhu Gloom and expansions.

Game Profile: The Game Of 49

Chips in a row – Money under
the table – Game on the line.

Classification Lite Strategy Game
Mechanics Area Control, Auction Bidding
Publication Markee Games, 2014
Ages 10+
Time 30-45
Players 2 – 5
Description

The Game Of 49 is a quick playing game that generates a ton of interaction
among players because every turn is a free-wheeling auction bid for a spot on
the board.
The objective of the
game is to occupy 4 spaces in a row (vertically, horizontally, or diagonally) on
a central board that has 49 numbered spaces in a 7×7 grid layout.  The numbers circle the board in order beginning
with the number 1 in the upper left corner and continue in numerical order
spiraling to the center ending with the number 49 spot dead center.  Each player starts the game with $49 and a
pile of chips in one color.  The starting
player draws a card from a deck of 60 numbered cards, reveals the number, and
then begins the bidding.  The player ultimately
winning the bid, pays the bank, takes the card, and places one of their chips
on the spot on the central board that corresponds to the number on the card.  Play continues in this manner.
There are 12 wild
cards in the draw deck and have two features.
The first feature of a wild card will indicate either a range of numbers
(ex. 25-40) or be a Wild 49 card. Winning the bid for a card with a range of
numbers allows the winning player to choose a spot within the range.  Five of the 12 wild cards are the Wild 49
card and so bidding will be hot and heavy every time it comes up.  It is not only the central spot on the board
but, is also the only spot that can have a change of ownership during the game.
The second feature of a wild card is a payoff.
This is the only way a player’s money supplies will get replenished. After
the wild card is auctioned off, each player will receive $7 for each spot they
control on the board up to a maximum of $49.
Sometimes it makes sense to spend money to get a spot that will never be
connected just to get your money supply replenished.
The Game Of 49 revolves
around forcing others to pay too much for their spots while paying as little as
possible for your spots.  Can you keep
enough money in reserve so that when it’s time you can make the winning play or
be able to block someone else from winning?
There are lots of laughs as players count their money again and again to
see if they have enough to make the play of the day.

We have an open copy of The Game Of 49 available in our Demo
Games Library for you come in and try.

Game Profile: Lanterns: The Harvest Festival

The harvest is in, and the
artisans are preparing for the upcoming festival.

Classification Lite Strategy Game
Mechanics Tile Placement, Hand Management, Set Collection
Publication Renegade Games, 2015
Ages 8+
Time 30
Players 2 – 4
Description
The game of Lanterns is one of those games that looks relatively simple but turns out
to be amazingly tactical.  The objective
is to score the most points.  The method
to get points is to collect lantern cards in one of 3 configurations: 4 of 1
color, 3 pairs of different colors, or 1 of each of all 7 colors.  Players gain lantern cards by laying a lake
tile per turn adjacent to an existing lake tile in the central play area.  When a lake tile is placed, each player will
receive the color lantern card that corresponds to the color on the tile side facing
them.  In addition, the player who placed
the lake tile will get an additional lantern card if they place their tile so
that the color on the side of the tile being placed matches the color on the
adjacent tile(s).  Everyone’s lantern
cards are played face up in front of them so you can see what sets everyone is close
to completing.
The key to success is
to get sets before anyone else as there is a descending point value on each of
the sets.  The first set of 7 different
colors turned in gets 10 points, the second set of 7 earns 9 points, etc.  The top score value for 3 pairs is 9 points
and for a 4-of-a-kind set the points start at 8 points.  Again as with the 7 of each color set, the
next sets of 3 pairs and 4-of-a-kind are worth fewer points.
So how do you place a
tile that gets you the cards you need without giving your opponents the card
they need?  The game plays quickly and
keeps everyone’s head in the game.  You are
always gaining new cards and new insights to what others are getting close to
scoring.  Players have in their 3 lake tiles
from which to choose from on each turn.
They must choose wisely which lake tile to play and how to orient the
colors to win at
Lanterns.

New, New, New.  More new games have arrived!
Here’s a glance at these board games:

One of 3 games nominated for the prestigious 2015 Kennerspiel des Jahres (Strategy Game of the Year Award) is the newly released Elysium from Space Cowboys/Asmodee. Previous board games from Space Cowboys includes top seller Splendor and Black Fleet.

Elysium
Space Cowboys/Asmodee
In Elysium players will take on the role of an aspiring
demigod striving to win approval and create their legend with the Gods of Mount
Olympus.  To do this, players will build
card combinations to gain access to gold, heroes, and mythical powers over the
course of 5 Epochs.  Acquired cards will
first reside in a player’s Domain where the powers can be utilized.  However, points are scored for cards that
reside in a player’s Elysium.  The tension
mounts as players must decide when to move cards from their Domain, thereby giving
up the powers, and into their Elysium in order to accumulate victory
points.  Points are scored by creating sets
of cards in your Elysium.  Each card
belongs to one of 8 families (Apollo, Ares, Athena, Hades, Hephaestus, Hermes,
Poseidon, and Zeus) of which only 5 families will be in play in a given
game.  Each family of cards will also
have a level from 1 to 3.  Points are
scored for completing sets of a family and/or sets of equal levels.
Bonuses are earned for being the 1st to complete a particular set combination.

You can learn how Elysium is played in this video by Rodney Smith.

Android Netrunner
Chrome City
Fantasy Flight

Function breeds fashion in Chrome City. The Data Pack’s sixty new cards (three copies each of twenty individual cards) introduce players to the northern SanSan borough of Chrome City. Here, among the sketchy chop shops planted in the shadow of Haas-Bioroid’s genetics division, a growing community of chromeheads have begun to transform cybernetics into fashion statements.

If the surgery’s good, the latest cybernetics don’t just make you trendy; they also make you smarter, stronger, and more resilient. But a bad chopper’s just as likely to cause you irreparable brain damage as outfit you for the runways. Accordingly, Chrome City and its cybernetic hardware introduce a volatile mixture of risks and rewards, many of which are centered around protecting or damaging the Runner’s brain.
