Province
Laboratory Games

Province is a two player game where you must strategically manage your resources and workers to build, complete goals, and score the most victory points to win! The game features a communal worker pool representing the available workers in your town. Players move their workers to generate resources (Labor and Coin) that are used to build the various Structures, which in turn effect resource generation. But your opponent can also move the workers leaving you without the resources you need!

Another new game is Qwixx from Gamewright.  Qwixx is a fast family dice game for 2-4 players.
Qwixx
Gamewright
Players are involved with every roll of the dice.  The object of the game is to cross off as many numbers in the 4 different colored rows as possible on their score sheet. The more numbers in a particular color row the higher the score.
Sound easy?  You must mark off numbers in each row from left-to-right.  You may skip numbers in a particular row, but any numbers skipped over may not be marked off later.  A player who has marked off at least 5 numbers in a particular color row may lock it. This row is now finished and closed off for all the players and no more numbers may be marked off in this color in any of the subsequent rounds. The key to winning is to utilize the dice rolls to maximize points and timing as to when to close rows.

Game Profile: Top 5 Rummy

The card game with a twist!

Classification Card Game
Mechanics Set Collection
Publication Ravensburger, 2013
Ages 8+
Time 20 – 40
Players 2 – 4
Description
If you’re looking for
a game of
Rummy with a twist, Top 5 Rummy is the game for you.  The game comes from designer Rüdiger Dorn who
did the games
Las Vegas, Istanbul, & Dragonheart.
The goal in Top 5
Rummy
is to be the first player to collect number
cards that complete 5 of the 7 available tasks.
There are 9 available double-sided tasks tiles describing 18 different
tasks that can be used to provide variety.
The game board is where the twist comes in.  It is made up of a price wheel and a card
tray with 8 slots.  Each card slot lines
up with a price value on the price wheel.  The draw deck consists of 4 colors of cards
with 2 sets numbered 1 – 10 in each color.
At the start of the game a card is drawn and placed face up in each of
the card slots on the game board.  Each
of the 8 cards will line up with a price value above it indicated on the price
wheel.  This indicates how much it costs
to buy that card or how many chips a player can receive for adding a card to
that slot.  No more than 2 cards can
occupy a particular card slot at a time.
Any time a card is purchased from the card tray the price wheel rotates
one space. The cards in the card tray now will align with a new price
value.  A card that had a price value of
-0- before the wheel rotated would now have a price value of 7 after the turn
of the wheel.  Players start with a hand
of 5 cards and take turns buying and selling cards trying to collect the
necessary cards to complete the tasks.
They will need to manage their coins and their hands plus keep track of
how the price wheel on the board is turning.
The tasks to be completed are straight forward things like 5 even
numbered cards, a full house, 3 of a kind, etc.
Each task tile has 4 player spots that can be occupied when completed.  A player may occupy only one spot on each
task tile.  The timing of completing
tasks to gain a spot on the tiles is critical as these spots can yield a
positive effect such as gaining coins or additional cards or a negative effect
such as losing some of your coins or discarding cards from your hand.  It is best to be the first to complete a task
and gain a reward spot than to be the last to complete and get a negative consequence.
Remember, it only takes 5 completed
tasks to win.
We have an open copy of Top 5 Rummy available in our Demo
Games Library for you come in and try.

Looney Labs

Adding to the Fluxx collection is the newly released Regular Show Fluxx, a collaboration between Looney Labs and Cartoon Network.

Join Mordecai, Rigby and the whole gang. Do your friends a solid and distract the Destroyer of Worlds to save The Park… but don’t let Benson catch you doing donuts or you’re fired!

For those not familiar, Fluxx is a card game all about change as the name implies. The rules are simple.  Begin the game with a hand of 3 cards and one basic rule: draw one card then play one card.  Follow the directions written on the card you chose to play. As cards are drawn and played from the deck, the rules of the game change from how many cards are drawn, played or even how many cards you can hold at the end of your turn.  You won’t know what the winning condition is until someone plays a Goal card. If you don’t like the Goal, play a new Goal card. If you don’t like the Rules, play a new Rule card. Collect the Keepers and avoid the Creepers. Match the Keepers to the Goal and win.

Lost Legacy – The Starship
AEG

Also new is AEG’s Lost Legacy: The Starship  designed by Seiji Kanai and Hayato Kisaragi. Seiji Kanai is the game designer who created the card game, Love Letter.

In the distant past, a starship from a faraway world appeared in the sky.  Damaged in battle, the craft broke apart and traced lines of fire across the horizon.  These falling stars crashed to the surface, and in the ages to come, became enshrined in legends as the Lost Legacy.  Discover where the Lost Legacy can be found and win the game.

Lost Legacy: The Starship is a card game of risk deduction, and luck stowed in a blue and silver velour pouch.  The game consists of 2 phases. The first phase of the game consists of playing your cards with the goal of eliminating your opponents and seeking to find the Lost Legacy card.  The Investigation phase begins when the draw deck runs out in which eligible players get a shot at identifying the Lost Legacy card and thereby winning.

Game Profile: Love Letter

Win the heart of the Princess
in this game of deduction.

Classification Card Game
Mechanics Hand Management, Bluffing
Publication AEG, 2012
Ages 10+
Time 20
Players 2 – 4
Description

Love Letter is a game of risk, deduction, and luck.
 So the story goes….
…In the wake of
the arrest of Queen Marianna for high treason, none was more heartbroken than
her daughter, Princess Annette.
Suitors
throughout the City-State of Tempest sought to ease Annette’s sorrow by
courting her to bring some joy into her life.
You are one of these suitors, trying to get your love letter to the
princess.  Unfortunately, she has locked
herself in the palace, so you must rely on intermediaries to carry your message.
Love Letter consists of 16 cards
representing 8 different individuals from the royal residence.  Included on each card is a point value equal
to that individuals’ station.  The higher
the point value, the closer that person is to the princess.  Additionally, each card includes text that
describes the effect the card has when it is discarded. A game is played in a
series of rounds.  Each round represents
one day.  At the end of each round, one
player’s letter reaches Princess Annette and receives a red token of affection.
Players begin the
round with one card in their hand.  On
their turn they will draw a 2nd card and then choose one of the two to
discard applying the effect indicated on the discarded card.  The object is to knock out the other suitors
while trying to retain the highest point value card.  You must always play a card even if the
effect is bad for you.  Hope to have one
of the 2 Handmaids to discard as she will provide protection from the other
players until your next turn.  The Barons
allow you to compare hands with another suitor but be careful as the one
holding the lower point valued card is eliminated.  If you’re caught holding the Countess with
either the King or one of the Princes you will have to discard your Countess
card revealing a little information you may not want the other suitors to know.  Once the draw deck is empty or there is all
but one player has been eliminated.  Of
the non-eliminated players the one holding the highest point value card wins
the round and receives a red token of affection.  The number of players will dictate the number
of tokens of affection that must be received by a suitor to win the game.

We have an open copy of Love Letter available in our Demo
Games Library for you come in and try.

Game Profile: The Downfall of Pompeii

Run for your lives! Can you
escape the inferno?

Classification Strategy Game
Mechanics Hand Management, Tile Placement, Grid Movement
Publication Mayfair Games, 2013
Ages 10+
Time 40 – 60
Players 2 – 5

Description

The Downfall of Pompeii is by game designer Klaus-Jurges Wrede who created the popular game, Carcassonne. The Downfall of Pompeii is easy to learn, easy to play and a ton of fun because you get to toss your opponents player tokens into a volcano. It’s the year 79 AD, the year of the consulship of Augustus and Vespasian. Pompeii has been rebuilt into an important trade city following a devastating earthquake and a mass exodus of its citizens.

The game board has a map of the city of Pompeii overshadowed by active Mount Vesuvius in the corner of the board. There are two distinct phases in the game. During the 1st phase Roman citizens are reentering the city occupying the new and splendid buildings. Players will use a hand of cards to place their citizen tokens in various buildings throughout the city. The key is to place their citizens so they can quickly escape from the city when the volcano blows. Grouping citizens in a building can either be advantageous or a total disaster. Advantageous in that during the escape phase, a citizen moving from a full building full can move faster than from a building with only a few citizens. Disastrous in that groups of citizens tend to be easy targets when the lava starts to flow. When the 1st AD 79 card is drawn game play takes a twist. Players now have the opportunity to relatives when placing their citizens. And the fun begins as Omen cards will start to appear. When a player draws an Omen card they immediately remove, at their choosing, one of their opponents’ citizens from a building and tosses it into the volcano. So phase 1 is place, draw, and sometimes throw someone into the volcano.

The second AD 79 card drawn triggers Phase 2 which begins the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Six lava tiles are immediately placed in the city. Any and all citizens occupying a space where the lava tiles are placed immediate are tossed into the volcano. Citizens are now in a panic to flee the city before being consumed by lava. Player turns now consist of: 1) choosing 2 of their citizens and sprinting as fast as movement allows towards a city exit, 2) drawing a random lava tile and placing it, at their choosing, where it can inflict maximum damage to their opponents, and 3) taking any citizens killed by their flowing lava tile and tossing them into the volcano. The game ends when all citizens have either escaped from the city or been trapped within the city with no escape route, or overcome by lava and tossed into the volcano. The player with the most survivors outside the city is the game winner.

Game Profile: Istanbul

Welcome, merchant!  How well can you utilize your assistants in
this strategy game of collecting valuable rubies?

Classification Strategy Game
Mechanics Modular Board, Grid Movement, Pick Up & Deliver
Publication AEG, 2014
Ages 10+
Time 40 – 60
Players 2 – 5
Description
Istanbul is the 2014 winner of the prestigious
Kennerspiel des Jahres award, i.e. strategy game of the year in Germany. The
game features merchants racing around a marketplace, dropping off and
recollecting assistants who can perform tasks in each of the 16 modular market
stalls.  The race is to acquire 5 rubies
before your opponents.
Players will each begin with a team of one
merchant, 4 assistants, one family member, and a wheelbarrow.  They will
take their merchant/assistants team through the various places within the
bazaar. Each place has as a specific action that will be performed when a
merchant and his assistants stop at it.  In order to perform the action at
a location the merchant must leave behind one assistant.
There are various ways to acquire rubies.  Rubies can be acquired at both the small mosque and the great
mosque.  Each mosque requires 2 visits
and 2 specialty mosque tile purchases in order to obtain a ruby. One ruby can
be acquired from the wainwright after 3 visits and 3 purchases of wheelbarrow expansions.
Exchange goods for rubies at the Sultan’s
palace.  The Gemstone dealer wants gold
for his rubies.
In order to get ready
to acquire rubies, merchants will have to drop off assistants at various
warehouses and markets to obtain goods and/or coins to be traded for what is
needed to acquire rubies.  Merchants must
use their assistants as efficiently as possible, pick them back up quickly and
re-employ them in other market locations.
Along the way merchants can acquire bonus cards to speed the
process.  They can make use of the governor
and the smuggler.  They can even use
their favorite family member who keeps getting arrested and sent back to jail.

With the modular set up of the 16 stalls and a number of ways to get the rubies, Istanbul promises plenty of good times and replayability. We have an open copy of Istanbul available in our Demo Games Library for you come in and try.
