New Game: Living Forest

Living Forest is a game about saving the forest from fires.  The goal is to be the first player to achieve one of the three victory conditions. One way to win is to put out 12 fires, or you can plant 12 trees, or you can collect 12 sacred flowers. – – 2 to 4 players – – 40 minutes game play

Each turn players will press their luck turning over cards in their deck.  Each card will feature symbols representing suns, water, plants and alone.  Suns can be used to add cards and build a better deck.  Water can be used to put out fires.  Plants can be used to plant additional trees on your player board.  If 3 alone symbols pop up before you stop, you will get only 1 action this turn.  Stop before 3 pop up and you will get 2 actions this turn. One action you can take allows you to move on a rondel, that can yield a third action.

Living Forest is easy to learn and easy to play, but there are 3 different ways to win and if you press to hard you may be left lost in the forest.

New Game: The Wolves

The Wolves is all about building and moving a pack of wolves to gain additional members of the pack and get them position when the time is right to hunt prey or to dominate a region.  – – 2 to 5 players – – 75 minutes game play

Every pack starts with 2 regular wolves and 2 alpha wolves.  On each turn players can move their wolves, build a den, howl, or dominate. The modular board will have symbols randomly placed on them to start the game.  In each of the 3 scoring rounds the wolf pack with dominance in the areas selected will score points.  The packs will know where they need to be and when they need to be there before the game starts.  Along the way packs can be upgraded by howling to attract more wolves or by building dens to unlock abilities. Packs can score points by surrounding prey and by building dens.  Points are also scored by dominating areas at the scoring rounds.

Your packs must howl, build and move, move, move.  After all, Wolves don’t sit still.  The actions are triggered by using a tile flipping system on each player’s board.  In order to activate an action a player must flip over 2 matching tiles of the 6 available.  The tiles have different terrain types on the other side.  Players have to think ahead.  They will need to flip the right tiles to do the action they want this turn and set them up to do the action they want on the next turn.  This one looks like a howling good time.

The Red Cathedral

Recently, we got a chance to get The Red Cathedral on the table for a first-time play. After playing it, we feel this is a seriously good strategy game put together in a fairly small package. – – 1 to 4 players – – 80 minutes game play

Players are going to work to build a cathedral. They will build different sections in different towers. The key is to build and decorate enough sections in a tower to max out your score for each tower. The player boards are double-sided (basic and advanced) that house their banners, doors, arches, and a cross ornamentations, and their gained workshop tiles. The cathedral construction site consists of a number of towers with a base, a number of midsections, and a dome. The layout is determined by a randomly selected Building Plan card. The cathedral cards are then populated with random workshop tiles.

The game revolves around a market board that utilizes a rondel mechanism where necessary resources can be acquired, and additional actions can be taken. Players select 1 of 5 dice to move around the roundel to a new market space. Market actions include gaining resources, moving their resources to cathedral sections, enhancing their ability to gather resources, or just scoring points. Once gathered, resources will need to get moved to the cathedral in order to complete sections a player has claimed. Adding ornamentation to a completed cathedral section increases a player’s strength in that tower which affects scoring. Ornamentation can be added to any completed section no matter whose claim banner is on it. Additionally, each space on the market board has room for three dice. The number of dice on a space will determine the number of resources a player may gain when landing on it. At the end of the player’s turn all the dice on that space will be rerolled making it a little challenging for the next player to play ahead.

The game ends when a player has completed their sixth section. Only completed sections of each tower are scored. Player with the most points wins. We really liked this game.

New Game: Wayfarers of the South Tigris

Wayfarers of the South Tigris is a worker placement, dice placement, and tableau building board game by designers Shem Phillips and SJ McDonald. Throughout the game you will be mapping the land, waterways, and skies, and reporting back to the House of Wisdom in Baghdad to share your findings. As discoveries are made players will want to quickly Journal their progress. – 1 to 4 players – – 60 to 90 minutes game play

Wayfarers of the South Tigris is set during the Abbasid Caliphate, circa 820 AD. Players will set off on an adventure to map the surrounding land, sea and the skies above.  Players will use a combination of dice and workers to gather information and report in their journal with the hopes of gaining the most victory points.  Each player begins the game with 3 dice and 2 workers.  On a turn each player will be able to place a die or a worker, or they can rest and get back their played dice and reroll them to set up future turns.  There are 5 decks of cards with 4 of each face up for players to activate or claim.  Land and sea cards provide action spaces for dice and resources. They also provide actions to upgrade tiles to enhance the ability of their dice on future rolls. Space cards provide game end points and must be played above a land or sea card.  Town folk cards can be used to enhance either land or sea cards.  Inspiration cards enhance the scoring on space cards. The main board is a journal track where players move their marker forward to collect additional resources and abilities.  Movement is triggered by actions on cards.  There are 10 total steps on the journal board, but multiple paths to reach the end.  When a player does reach the end that triggers game end.  Each player including the player who triggered gets one more turn.  Final scores are then calculated.  Scores come from space cards, various sets of sea and land cards and from upgrade tiles on their player board.  There are 3 guild locations on the main board.  The player with the most influence on each of the 3 guilds scores 3 points.  Influence is gained throughout the game from abilities on cards.  The player with the most points will be the winner of Wayfarers of the South Tigris.

    New Game: Tiletum

Tiletum is a dice management game in which dice have a dual function: gaining resources and performing actions. Take on the roles of rich merchants traveling throughout Europe, from Flanders to Venice, during the Golden Age of the Renaissance. 1 to 4 players – – 60 to 100 minutes game play

Tiletum is a game in which wealthy merchants visit cities across Europe.  Along the way they will build trading posts and pillars contributing to the construction of cathedrals.  Players in this game will also invite influential figures into their homes and fulfill contracts using the resources available.  When the time comes, at the end of each of the 4 rounds, players should be positioned in the city where a fair will be held.  Points are scored at that time based on scoring tiles randomly drawn and placed face up before the game starts.  Points are scored during play with major points available during each of the 4 fairs.  In addition, there will be points awarded at game end for houses completely filled with guests and a multiplier for trading houses and pillars built.  The player with the most points will be the winner.

As a dice management game, a certain number of dice will be rolled each round. On your turn, choose a die to gain the number of corresponding resources equal to the value of the die, then perform the associated action. The power of the action is inversely proportional to the value of the die, so the fewer resources you gain, the more powerful the actions you take and vice versa. Each turn begins with the first player drawing random dice and rolling them.  They will be placed around an action wheel based on the number of pips on the die.  There are 6 action spaces around the action wheel.  They are king action, contract action, architect action, character action, merchant action, and joker action.  Each of those actions gives the player 3 options of what to do with that action.  There is an architect and a trader that can be moved around the map to get to locations to build and to get to the right cities to participate in the fairs.  There are contracts to accept and fill.  There are houses on a player’s board to filled with guests. There is a king track to score points and to claim player order.  In other words there are many things to do, many ways to go about doing them.  The player who pulls all of that together will be the winner of Tiletum.
