Game Profile: Big Money

Big Money
  • Publisher:  Wonder Forge, 2018
  • Players:  2 – 5
  • Time:  30 Min.

Big Money lives up to its name.  The dollars come in $1 zillion, $5 zillion and $10 zillion bills. Who doesn’t want to be a zillionaire? This dice rolling and set collection game is easy to learn, easy to play and easy to get to the table.

Players begin the game with one $5 zillion business. Each business is from 1 or 5 types: sports, food, travel, entertainment, or technology.  The object of the game is to accumulate the most money.  On their turn a player roles 6 dice.  One is an industry die.  On 5 of the sides of this die is the symbol for each of the industry types.  Every business of that type is paid for all players owning that type of building.  Pays range from $5 zillion to $15 zillion for each business.  There is also a bonus payout for having more than one business in an industry type.  In addition, there are stock certificates available for each industry.  They are more expensive to buy, but are a quick way to double the investment.  Buildings are kept in play after a payout.  Stock certificates bring a one-time payout.  Then they are discarded.

There is a 6th symbol on the industry die.  It triggers biz news when it is rolled.  Biz news is a card deck on the main board.  Biz news is not good news.  It generally means players are going to spending money to cover the biz.  Once the industry die is settled, the active player selects dice from the other 5 six-sided dice to keep.  They then get 2 more rolls to complete the best poker score they can.  One Pair pays them $5 zillion.  Five of a kind pays them $30 zillion.  Next, the active player can purchase 1 of the 4 face up businesses in the market.

Play continues until the bank runs out of money.  Players add up their zillions to determine who is the winner of Big Money

Game Profile: Arboretum

The theme of Arboretum is for players to construct their most valuable pathway through trees.  The trees are beautifully depicted on the cards.  There are 10 different sets of trees, each numbered from 1 through 8.

The mechanics of playing cards and building a pathway is easy.  Players start the game with a randomly dealt hand of seven cards.  On each turn a player adds two cards to their hand.  Next, they play one card into their arboretum in front of them and discard one card to their face-up discard pile.  Cards added to a hand can come from the face-down draw deck and from the top of opponents discard piles.  Paths that score must start and end with the same type of tree with every tree being in ascending order.  Additionally, the player must have at least one of that type of tree in their hand at the end of the game.

The fun starts on round 1 and builds to a climax when the draw deck is exhausted and scoring begins.  The challenge throughout the game is how to build multiple pathways, and more challenging, what to discard.  Every card in hand is important to someone at the table.  Anything discarded can be picked up by another player.  A player needs to keep a card either to help themselves or prevent another player from using it.  At the end, each species of tree can have only one pathway scored and it will be the player with the highest value of that species in their hand.  Cards must be played to build the path and must be held to score the path.  The game play is easy.  The decisions are tough.  The starts at the first round and rolls throughout.  Arboretum is good with 2 players and really shines with 3 and 4.

Game Profile: Sagrada

  • Publisher:  Floodgate Games, 2017
  • Players:  1 – 4
  • Time:  30 – 45 minutes

Sagrada is all about creating a beautiful stained-glass window.  Five different colors of dice are used to build your own, hopefully high scoring, colorful window.

Each player has a player board with a 4×5 grid waiting to be filled with dice.  Before the game starts, each player is dealt 2 double-sided window patterned cards.  They chose one of the cards and the side they want to play.  Some are easier to play than others.  Selecting a more difficult card provides more favor tokens that can be spent on helper cards during the game and unspent as victory points at the end of the game.  Each of the ten rounds begins with the start player randomly drawing two dice per player plus one from a bag.  Each player will get to place two dice and the remaining unchosen die will be placed on the round tracker.  The start player rolls these dice and places them in the central play area.  That player then selects one die to put in their window.  Now the fun begins. Some spots on your board require a certain color die.  Some spots require a certain number on a die.  The same color die may not be placed adjacent orthogonally to a die of the same color.  The same applies to the number on the die – cannot be placed adjacent orthogonally to a die of the same number.  However, they can be place diagonally from the same color or number.  One more rule, is when you are placing a die it must be placed adjacent (orthogonally or diagonally) from another die already on your board.

Turn order comes into play because die selection is; 1st player selects and places one die, then 2nd player does the same, then the 3rd player, then 4th player.  For the second die selection, it proceeds in reverse order beginning with the 4th player and ending with the 1st player.  The remaining die is placed on the round tracker and the 1st player token moves left to the next player.  After ten rounds, everyone has had the opportunity to place 2 dice per round and fill their 4×5 grid.  Final scoring is based on three things.  There are three public goals randomly dealt face-up at the start of the game. These cards provide points for certain combinations of colors or numbers. As well, each player is randomly dealt a private goal. This will be a color, and a player scores the sum of the numbers on all of that color dice on their board.  Lastly, there is a 1-point penalty for each vacant spot that could not be filled legally.  Tally the points and the player with the most points wins.

Sagrada is quick at 30 to 40 minutes, colorful, and a little more tactical than it first appears.  This is a great game the family can enjoy.

Game Profile: Bunny Kingdom

  • Publisher:  Iello, 2017
  • Players:  2 – 4
  • Time:  40 – 60 Min.

Bunny Kingdom is one of those games that plays at a different level that the art and theme would indicate.  The theme sounds young.    The box says ages 14 and up.  This is really a family weight game that can be played by players 10 and up.  Bunny Kingdom is about amassing points by building fiefs with bunny miniatures and accumulating parchment cards for additional game end scoring.

At its heart, Bunny Kingdom is a card drafting game.  In a 4-player game, each player will be dealt 10 cards at the start of each of four rounds.  Players will look at their ten cards, select two to play and pass the remaining eight to the player on their left or right, depending on the round.  Each player, then plays their two cards after which they will select two more cards to play from the cards just passed to them and pass the remaining 6.  Play continues in this manner.  Once all cards have been selected and played, the round moves to the scoring phase.  There are four major types of cards.  One type defines a location on the central game board.  The game board is made up of 10×10 terrain spaces.  Each space has one card with its location. Play a location card and place one of your bunnies on that space.  You want to try to get locations adjacent to each other.  A second card type is buildings.  These provide cities with turrets, sky towers, or resources to place in your fiefs that can increase your scoring potential.  A third type is provision cards and there are only a few.  These allow you to draw and play cards from the card supply deck.  A fourth type are parchment cards, lots of them.  These provide additional end game points if the conditions are met.  Parchment cards are kept secret and when selected are placed face down in the player’s play area and not revealed until end game scoring.  A round’s scoring phase is calculated by multiplying the number of city turrets times the number of different types of resources in each fief controlled by a player.  Scores are kept on the score track located on the game board.  Scores after the first round are typically 1 or 2.  After round 2 they will be more like 7 or 8.  Third round scores could be in the 40’s or 50’s.  Fourth round scores may be well over 100.  After the fourth round is scored, end of game scoring takes place.  Players reveal their parchment cards and tally their additional points.  You can rack up another 50 to 100 points with these.  The player with the most points wins.

The game play in Bunny Kingdom is light and breezy like the name suggests.  However, it is very tactical.  Building fiefs is essential and a player needs to pay attention to where other players are building.  The card drafting is a little tense.  Of the 10 cards dealt at the start of a round, most players will want to hang on to most of them and not want to pass them.  This one is 45 minutes of fun with bunnies.
