New from Holy Grail Games is Encyclopedia, a dice-based worker placement game for 1 to 4 players that plays in 60 to 120 minutes.

You are taken back to 1739 where, as an aspiring naturalist and adventurer you will work to create the first Encyclopedia of natural history. The goal of the game is to become the biggest contributor to this encyclopedia. Through a dice placement mechanic, you will be able to choose different animals to study, prepare for your research and lead expeditions to other continents. All this will allow you to reach your main goal: publishing your findings to impress the public and increase your fame!

 Each of the 6 rounds begins with the flip over of a randomly selected bonus tile to get everyone started.  Then all players roll 4 dice drawn randomly from a bag.  Each player will now carefully place a die on one of 4 available spots on their player board.  Higher value die can be more valuable than lower value die, but there are many ways to mitigate low dice rolls.  In turn order players select a die and use it as a worker on one of the 6 available action locations on the main board.  They can choose any die, not just their own.  Taking another player’s die gives the other player a bonus of points, coins or expedition tokens.  The action locations include a place to get 5 coins, a place to get expedition tokens, a place to claim an expert card, a place to research animal cards, a place to go on an expedition, and a place to publish the results of the research.  Each animal has 4 characteristics to by research and published.  Points are gained by collecting sets of animals with matching characteristics and publishing those results.  After 6 rounds the most amazing naturalist will be the winner of Expedition.

Players will each play on 4 different boards during the game (Industry, Navigation, Expansion, and Warfare). Every board has different ways to accumulate points.  The game begins with each player drawing 2 alien cards with diverse special abilities.  They select one to play.  Four public goals are revealed, one for each board.  Then players will use their own abilities and a common set of dice rolled by the active player to explore and build across the galaxy.  The player with the most points will be the winner.

Stand with your allies as legendary Jedi facing entire legions of battle droids.  Welcome to Star Wars: The Clone Wars, a Pandemic system game.  In this game players will work together to defeat 1 or the 4 main villains.  Each villain brings a different challenge.  Players get to choose one of 7 heroes.  They must work together throughout the game to complete a series of missions on different planets scattered across space.  There will be up to 6 separate missions in each game that must be completed before the final mission against the main villain is encountered.  In order to win the players must compete all the missions including the final mission featuring the main villain.  Along the way they will take 4 different actions each turn.  They will move across space from planet to planet.  There they could encounter enemy battle droids and enemy ships.  After each turn more droids will appear on the board.  If a 4th droid is to appear on a planet and an enemy ship is placed on that planet instead.  The placement of a ship causes the threat level to increase.  If the threat level reaches a certain point the villain wins.  The threat can be increased in additional ways and must be monitored at all times.  Players will accumulate cards to help them vanquish the villains.  Players can gather together on planets to use their combined power to destroy droids and ships and eventually complete a mission located on that planet.  So, grab your favorite Jedi and head for planets through the galaxy and be ready to fight to win the battle of The Clone Wars.

Splendor Duel brings a smart 2 player version of Splendor to us in a 30-minute game play.

In Splendor Duel, there are three ways to win the game – 1) collect 20 points on cards, 2) collect 10 crowns on cards, or 3) collect 10 points on one color of cards.

On each turn a player will be able to take two optional actions.  One will be to reload the board where gems are located for use later to buy cards.  The second option is to use a privilege token to take one gem from the main board.  Then the player will be able to either take up to 3 gems from the main board, as long as they are adjacent to each other or buy one of the face-up cards.  In this version of Splendor there are 5 cards face up from the first deck, 4 from the second deck and 3 from the third deck.  Cards come in five colors plus wild cards that must have their color declared when they are bought.  Some cards have crowns on them. Some cards have special ability symbols on them.  Those abilities can be to take another turn, another gem or a privilege token.  Some even allow a player to steal a gem from their opponent.  Splendor Duel has all of the great game play of Splendor with some very interesting added elements.

Catan Dawn of Humankind is a standalone variant game in the Catan game series. – – 3 to 4 players – – 60 to 90 minutes game time

Catan recreates the Dawn of Humankind moving from Africa to Europe, Asia, The Americas and to Australia.  Players start with 2 camps in Africa.  They will send explorers out across the map to create new camps which will add more ways to collect the 4 resources needed to build and explore.  The object of the game is to collect 10 victory points.  A point is scored for each new camp created.  The first player to create camps in each of the 4 regions outside of Africa gains 2 points.  Any other player who creates camps in all 4 regions gains 1 point.  There are 4 progress tracks for players to advance on.  One will enhance the ability to move explorers, progressing from 3 moves up to 7 on each turn, if paid for.  Another track will allow a player to move one of the two tokens that will block the production of a region and allow the player to take a resource card from another player with a camp on that region.  The other 2 tracks work in conjunction with each other to allow players to advance to space on the board containing animal tokens.  The only way to get to or through these locations is to have the correct progress on both of those tracks.  If so, the first player to get to that location will collect an animal tile and the point or ability pictured on the back of the token.  One of the abilities on the back of these tokens allows the player the ability to remove the production capability from a region in Africa.  Players will need to create camps out of Africa because those original camps will become less valuable as the game progresses.  For those who love Catan, this one will be a hit.  It takes Catan to new levels, with some interesting twists.

Can you escape from the nether?  In Minecraft Portal Dash players will work together to race across the board to reach the Nether portal and to safety.  Along the way players will need to dispatch monsters who block the way.  They will need to dismantle the main cube to create the necessary steps to move onto the next stage of the adventure.  If you fail to build the steps in time the team will lose.  Only if you work together and use your tools wisely will the players be able to move to the next level and on to victory and safety by exiting through the Nether portal.

New from AEG is Ready Set Bet, a game for 2 to 9 players and plays in 45 to 60 minutes.

And they’re off! Get ready to place your bets on nine fast moving racehorses. After four speedy races, the player with the most money will be the betting champion.

Ready Set Bet is played over four rounds. Each player starts the game with five betting tokens, numbered 2 through 5, of their color. One non-player will roll the dice, move the horses, and carry on with announcing the race progress. Or you can use an app for the dice rolls so everyone can be a player.

The game consists of a betting board with numerous places to place bets. Each horse has three Win spaces, two Place spaces, and two Show spaces in which to place bets. Each round consists of players betting on a single horse race while the action is happening. Once someone has placed a bet on a space no other player can bet on that same space. Each space has a multiplier to use with the bet token to determine the payout for that space. Beware, many spaces have little red numbers that indicate how much you lose if that bet is not a winner. Getting bets down early can be a real advantage. Additional betting spots are available for Color bets, Prop bets, and Exotic Finish bets. These spots are all cards that are randomly drawn and placed on the betting board before a race begins. Bets can be placed until the 3rd horse crosses a red line about two thirds of the way down the racetrack. As soon as a horse hits the finish line the race is over, wins and losses are paid out, and players get their betting tokens back. The racetrack and betting board is reset for the next race and then they’re off again.

Between races each player is dealt two VIP cards. They will choose and keep one and discard the other. These are special ability cards to use in betting for the races and can be used in each subsequent race. Players gain their first VIP card at the end of the first race which can then be used in the second, third, and fourth races. Their second card at the end of the 2nd race which can then be used along with the first VIP card in the third and fourth races, and so forth. So, by the start of the 4th and final race each player will have three VIP cards to use.
