New Edition: Hansa Teutonica Big Box

Hansa Teutonica Big Box – – 3 to 5 players – – 45 to 90 minutes game time.

Hansa Teutonica was originally published in 2009. It is now back in print in a big box version. This edition includes 2 expansion maps, 9 mission cards, and the Emperor’s Favor expansion. The game is all about scoring the most points using different ways to get them. The key is to use traders to capture routes and take control of cities adjacent to those routes. Control means having all 2, 3, or 4 spaces between cities occupied by only your traders. Traders can be kicked out of a route location by another player. This is a good thing because the displaced player now gets to place 2 traders on adjacent routes. Players will want to be in everyone’s way all the time. This game is a tactical marvel.

New: Get On Board

Get on Board: New York and London is a clever flip and write game.  The New York side of the board is for 2 or 3 players.  The London side of the board is for 4 or 5 players.  The goal of the game is to more score points than everyone else by picking up and delivering 4 types of passengers to the locations of their choice. Elderly ladies, students, tourists and businesspeople are all looking for a different place to be dropped off. – – 2 to 5 players – – 30 minutes game time

A card will be flipped to start each turn.  Depending on which personal sheet a player has will determine what bus line they must build that turn.  Each sheet is different, so one player may have to build two bus segments straight ahead, while another may have to build only one segment, or possibly make a turn off the direction they are going.  In the end points are scored for everyone delivered to the correct location, plus any passengers picked up and not delivered.  Each player also has a hidden goal card that will gain points at game end if completed.  There could be some negative points as well if a player created any traffic jams by duplicating part of a route already built by another player.  So, Get on Board for some fun.

New Game: Carnegie

Carnegie is an economic game of industrial development inspired by the life of Andrew Carnegie, a Scottish-American industrialist and philanthropist. In Carnegie, players will recruit employees and expand their businesses by investing in real estate, producing goods, developing transport technology, and creating transport chains across the United States. The game is all about building an efficient factory to gain the most points by game end. The player with the most victory points wins.

– – 1 to 4 players – – 120 to 180 minutes game time

The game takes place over 20 rounds, with players each having one turn per round. In each round the active player will choose one of four actions, which the other players will follow.

Each player starts with the same factory, but that will soon change as players add new rooms to their factory.  Workers are used to activate the actions of rooms and to move to the main board.  Moving to the main board will gain resources.  When those workers are brought back to their factory they will bring income with them. The main board is a map of the US.  It is broken into 4 major sections.  Having workers in those sections will bring additional resources.

There is a lot going on in Carnegie.  Points will come from many directions.  It features worker movement, resource management and some network building on the main board.

New Game: Meadow

Meadow is a new game from Rebel Studio. With 184 unique watercolor illustrated cards, a main board, 2 double-sided campfire boards, this set collection game takes players into the world of nature on an imaginary trek. A game of Meadow consists of 6 – 8 rounds (depending on the number of players) with 4 turns per round. Players will place their path tokens on either the main board or the campfire board. Placing in an unoccupied notch on the main board gains the player cards to their hand and the ability to play a card into their meadow or surrounding area. Placing in an unoccupied notch on the campfire board gains a special action and the ability to fulfill a bonus goal. The player with the most valuable collection of cards in their meadow and surrounding area plus any bonus points from fulfilled goals at the end of the game is the winner. – – 1 to 4 players – – 60 to 90 minutes.

Your collection of nature cards consists of:

  • Ground cards – illustrate ecosystems that are connected with the habitats of various types of animals, plants and fungi. These represent the lowest level of your meadow, have no victory point value, and are for placing Observation cards on. You can have up to 10 Ground cards creating up to 10 columns of cards.
  • Observation cards – present types of animals, plants, fungi, and human made creations. These have a card symbol, requirement symbol(s), victory point value and are placed in your meadow on top of Ground cards or other Observation cards that meet its requirement. When placed on top of an existing Observation card it covers up the previous cards’ card symbol. Only the top layer cards will have active symbols.
  • Landscape cards- illustrate the landscape on a players’ trek. These have a victory point value and are placed in your surrounding area above your meadow that meet the cards’ requirement.
  • Discovery cards – represent souvenirs and mementos found during the trek. These are worth victory points and are placed in your surrounding area above your meadow that meet the cards’ requirement.

Players are not able to rearrange their collection of cards once they are placed in their meadow and surrounding area. Some Observation cards require that 2 types of Ground cards be adjacent to each other in order to place the card. Therefore, having multiple starting columns of the right Ground cards and choosing which Observation cards to take and when to place them is the challenge.

New Game: The Guild of Merchant Explorers

The Guild of Merchant Explorers is an exploration of the Kingdom of Tigome.  In each game players will use a set of action cards to push out from a central city on their player map in various directions on different terrain types: mountains, deserts, plains and seas.  The objective is to accumulate the most points.  Exploring certain areas on the map will yield points.  In addition, there will be 3 goal cards drawn before the game starts to set public objectives.  The first player to meet an objective will receive 10 points.  Those meeting that objective later will receive 5 points. Those objectives may involve exploring trading posts, or towers, or shipwrecks.  – – 1 to 4 players – – 45 minutes game play

The game is played over 4 ages.  Each age takes place over several turns equal to the number of cards in the Exploration Deck. Players take turns simultaneously, placing explorers on spaces on their map according to the revealed explore card. Explorers must be placed adjacent to villages, the capital space, or previously placed explorers, and as players discover more villages, they can begin their journey each age from any of these new villages.   Special cards will be drawn in each of the first 3 ages that give each player a unique and powerful additional action that can be used in each age.  At the end of the 4th age the player with the most points wins.

The Guild of Merchant Explorers includes 4 different types of player maps.  All players use the same map in a game, but there are 4 types to choose from.  Some of them have slight rules variations to enhance the replayability of the game.

Big Box Version: Port Royal

This big box version of Port Royal brings back a great push-your-luck pirate game.  Players race to 12 points to win.  On each turn they will flip over cards from a large draw deck.  In the deck are pirate, ships and other action cards.  If a player draws two ships flying the same flag they go bust and all drawn cards go to the discard pile.  When a player decides to stop and collect booty they can choose to pay for pirates and the points or abilities that come with them. Or they can take ships and the money that comes with them.  Once they have chosen, each other player has the option to buy or take one of the remaining cards.  If they do, they must pay the active player one coin.  So, draw as many cards as you can so you have good options and other players will pay you to add to your good fortune.  – – 1 to 5 players – – 20 to 50 minutes game play

Port Royal Big Box with new graphics and art, brings a simpler variant for new players, contract cards to add a whole new element to the game, and a 5-chapter story version.

New Game: Brian Boru

New from Osprey Games is Brian Boru: High King of Ireland, an area control game that is driven by trick taking. – – 3 to 5 players – – 60 to 90 minutes

Each round players will draft cards and then play them during a trick taking round.  The winner of a trick will be able to claim a city on the board that was designated before the tricks were taken.  Then every player who did not win the trick will be able to take an action based on the card they played that did not win.  Winning tricks is important, but so is losing the right tricks with the right cards.  Losing with high cards gives more benefits than losing with low cards.  In any case it is a race to control territory, to marry the right royalty and to support the church.  Those are all different ways to score points.  The new king of Ireland will be the player with the most points.

New Game: Furnace

New from Arcane Wonders is Furnace, an engine-building game with an auction mechanic. – – 2 to 4 players – – 30 to 60 minutes game time

Set in the 19th century, players are the capitalists building their industrial revolution corporations. Through the auction bid phase, players build a bunch of factories and crank them up to produce resources and points.  Each round a series of factories are available to buy at auction.  Each player has 4 bid discs numbered 1 to 4.  These will get placed on the factories in order to obtain permanent ownership or for the use of that company. Whoever places the highest numbered bid on a factory card gains permanent ownership of it for the remainder of the game.  Everyone else who placed a bid on that factory gets that card’s specified compensation, either resources or a production effect times the number on their bid token.  Once the bidding is over, each player gets to crank up all of their factories to generate additional resources and points.  After 4 rounds the player with the most points wins.  This one is going to be easy to learn and get to the table, but it will be challenging to figure out how to generate points more efficiently than everyone else.
