New Game: Four Gardens

New: Four Gardens a family weight strategy game from Arcane Wonders. Four Gardens features a 4-tiered pagoda that will be rotated during the game to yield resources to players. Players use the four different resources to play on and complete cards. Cards can be placed in a player’s play area to build later or they can be used to take an action. Actions include: placing a card to your play area, rotating the pagoda to take resources, or moving resources from your storage area to your cards for construction. Completed cards move scoring markers ahead on one of four tracks. They are also flipped to form a pictorial panorama. These panoramas can be two to five cards long and will yield additional points when completed.

Four Gardens is easy to get on the table. It is easy to learn and play. It looks good on the table. – – 2 to 4 players – – 45 minutes game play.

New Game: Maglev Metro

New: Maglev Metro is a pick up and deliver from Bézier Games. It features amazing components to take players on a network building journey along high speed rail lines using magnetic levitation type trains. Players get a chance to hire a number of robots to assist in building their high speed rail lines. Unlike many rail games, in Maglev Metro players can build along the same lines as other players. The key is to use the robots to give players a wide range of special abilities. Players have to create the ability to pick up and deliver passengers along with many other abilities. No one will be able to activate all the different abilities. Players can move robots to new abilities if they need to change directions during the game.

Maglev Metro brings a new twist to the train game genre. It also brings many ways to work for points and delivers lots of replay value.

Rajas of the Ganges – A game with a variety of game mechanics that include: worker placement, dice rolling, tile placement, and route building. It has a unique scoring method where you must balance your rise on the dual paths of fame and money. The first player whose two paths cross each other on these tracks ends the game. – – 2 to 4 players – – 45 to 75 minutes game play.

Dragonrealm – a family friendly fantasy card game. Players will play card melds of straights and sets that can be in colors or numbers to roll dice to attempt to place their markers on locations. Once a location is full, it is scored. – – 2 to 4 players – – 20 to 30 minutes game play.

New Games: 4.22.2021

Three new games have arrived: Cubitos, Dune Imperium, and Crystal Palace.

Cubitos is a racing game using dice, lots of dice.  There are 4 different race boards in the game.  Choose one to play.  A turn involves rolling 9 dice.  Everyone has the same set of starter dice.  Some dice have sides that give movement points, some give money that will allow you do buy card with powers associated with more powerful dice.   A player can roll as many times as they like.  Any dice with a symbol showing instead of a blank side is moved to the action section of their board to be used at the end of their turn.  A player may then roll their remaining dice.  However, if they have at least 3 dice in their action area and they get all blank sides up on a roll, they bust.  They cannot move, nor can they buy better dice on that turn.  They do get to move up a track on a side board that could yield benefits later in the game.  It is basically a dice building game.  The dice look cool.  There are plenty of cards to choose from with different powers.  The first player to hit the finish line is the winner. – – 2 to 4 players – – 30 to 60 minutes game play.

Dune Imperium is a 1-4 player games that features deck building and worker placement.  There is also an element of area control where there is combat at the end of each round.  The combat looks to be pretty straight forward.  If you have the most combat points, you win.  The goal of the game to is get to 10 victory points.  Along the way there will be cards to buy to upgrade your deck, spice to be collected and sold for the money you will need and plenty of places to put your workers.  Workers will be triggered by the cards you play.  Then you will be able to take the action of the card and the action of the space you placed your worker. – – 1 to 4 players – – 60 to 120 minutes game play.

Crystal Palace is a relatively heavy strategy game. The theme is based on the 1851 World’s Fair, known as The Great Exhibition.  Established by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, it was the first World’s Fair of culture and industry.

Crystal Palace features dice as workers.  Players do not roll the dice.  Each player begins the game with 4 die.  At the start of each turn, players will simultaneously and secretly set each of their die to the number of pips they want.  Once everyone has revealed their dice, the dice have to be paid for.  Money is tight and the number of pips a player chooses to use determines how much money they will need to pay.  There are eight boards where the dice can be played in turn order.  Each of the boards yield a different thing: resource, money, a character, an invention, etc. that will be used to gain victory points.  On each of the eight boards, the player who places the highest number die will get to take the first action on that board. The game is played over 4 rounds and works well from 2 to 5 players.  It has many choices, such as which of the 10 different nations will be your home.  Each nation has a slightly different board and slightly different objectives to gain points.  There is plenty of replay value in this one. – – 2 to 5 players – – 90 to 150 minutes game play.

New: Mexican Train Deluxe. Mexican Train is now available with a twist, or two. This deluxe version features a set of Double 12 dominoes plus 7 new types of dominoes to enhance the game play. You can play a ‘Skip‘ domino to force a player to skip their turn. Play a ‘Draw‘ domino on an opponent to force them to draw a domino. You can ‘Reverse‘ play direction. On your turn, instead of playing a domino you can ‘Trade‘ one of your dominoes for a randomly chosen one from an opponent. Play a ‘Twist‘ domino flip around the end of the last domino played. You can ‘Derail‘ the game by having everyone randomly select a domino from the player on their left. And lastly, there is a ‘Wild‘ tile that can be played as anything, including as a double. These new domino types will bring some new twists to a classic game.

    1. The Fishermen of Catan – fish in the great lake or try casing in rich coastal shoals. Use fish tokens to gain certain advantages.
    2. Rivers of Catan – build along the river to receive gold which can be spent to gain resources.
    3. Caravans – caravans of camels starting at an oasis bring an extra victory point to settlements and cities adjacent to it and to any roads parallel to it.
    4. Barbarian Attack –  coastal tiles can be disabled through the use of barbarians. Barbarians can be repelled by the use of knights, which are deployed at a special castle hex.
    5. Traders & Barbarians – each player has a wagon that serves to shuttle commodities between three different trade hexes. These trade hexes, all situated on a coast, have a central point and four possible road paths leading to them.

Good news! Matt Leacock, designer of Pandemic is working on a co-op game called Climate Crisis. he is working with Matteo Menapace to create a game that is fun to play and scientifically accurate. The project kicked off sometime in March 2020. Matt and Matteo have spent a great deal of time studying climate change since then.

Currently in play test, the game involves four players working as the United States, Europe, China, and the Global South. The clock is ticking. Each round represents a 4-year period. Players have from now until 2050 to get the climate under control.

This is a game we can really look forward to see being published in the not too distant future. Stay tuned.

Off The Charts Games
