New Game: TEN

TEN is a press-your-luck and auction card game with a couple of interesting twists and from the design group that gave us Point Salad and Truffle Shuffle.

The object of a game of TEN is to create runs of numbers of 1 through 9 in four different suits.  Scoring is based on the longest run of consecutive numbers in each suit for each player.  The player with the biggest runs will be the winner.

On a turn the active player will turn over cards from the top of a draw deck until they either stop and take cards from the row they turned over or they bust.  Each card counts as its numerical value.  If a player turns over cards with a total value of more than 10 they bust.  One twist is that there are currency tokens that subtract from the value turned over.  However if a player turns over currency cards worth more than negative 10 they also bust.  Busting isn’t all bad.  For doing so a player will get a bust token, which has a value of three currency tokens.  Every time a wild card is drawn an auction will take place to see who gets that card.  Players use their currency tokens and bust tokens to win the bid and take the wild card to play in one of their runs at game end.  If a player stops before they bust, they get to choose to take either the number cards turned over or the currency cards turned over.  This game is easy to play and can get some interesting player interactions.

New Game: 7 Wonders Architects

7 Wonders Architects is a quick playing version of 7 Wonders, a card drafting and set collection game.  The goal of the game is to outscore your opponents by building your Wonder, gathering point cards, gathering sets of technology cards, and having a stronger military than the players on your left and right.  There are seven different Wonders to choose from. – – 2 to 7 players – – 25 minutes game time.

On each turn players will have the opportunity to take the top card from either a face-up draw pile on their right, a face-up draw pile on their left, or a blind draw from a central deck.  This card will be placed in a tableau in front of the player for use on later rounds and for scoring.  Grey cards are resource cards that are used to construct your wonder.  Gold cards act as wild resources. Green cards are technology. And, red cards are military strength.

The game will end when one player finishes the construction of their Wonder.  Each Wonder has five parts and must be constructed from the bottom up.  As each section is completed it will be flipped over to it’s completed side. Each part of the Wonder will yield points or a special ability.

7 Wonders Architects is easy to learn and teach.  It will be fun to experiment with each of the 7 Wonders.

Game Profile: Wild Space

  • Publisher: Pandasaurus
  • Players: 1 – 5
  • Time: 30 minutes

Wild Space is a set collection game featuring a series of planets to land on and explore. Each players’ crew is made up of one space animal and a collection of some of the six space animal specialists (bear, rhino, owl, lizard, monkey, and squid). Each animal specialist card also belongs to one of six occupations (military, pilot, botanist, engineer, programmer, and scientist). The object of the game is to score the most points. Points are scored for sets of each of the six space animals. Additionally, points are scored for having at least 3 of the same type of space animal. Emissary cards can also be added to a crew and each provides a goal to be achieved to score additional points. There are also robot cards that do not provide additional actions when played, but are worth victory points.

Each player has five spaceships to play during the game. Each ship will be used twice, once to land on a planet and once to explore that planet. Five of the ten planets will be used in a game. Each planet has two locations to land on and explore. Landing and exploring each provide an action some with prerequisites. A player may only land on a location once. The game will end when every player has used each of their ships twice giving each player ten turns. That doesn’t sound like much until you realized the game is all about chaining the actions on the crew cards. The action on the planets allow a player to draw cards or play a card into their crew. Many of the crew cards allow the player to play an additional card into their crew, or draw more cards to refill their hand. Those ten turns can turn into a lot of actions.

Wild Space has two beginning planets to be used in every game. Each game, a random draw will put one of three #3 planets will be added as well as one of three #6 planets, and one of two #9 planets. These additional planets are placed face down until one player has 3, 6, or 9 crew members in their crew respectively. When that crew size is achieved the appropriate planet is turned face-up and can be landed on by any player with the required crew size.

Wild Space is easy to learn to play and easy to teach. With the ability to change up some of the planets and a large deck of specialists, emissary, and robot cards the game is going to have plenty of replay value.
